It's almost time to start talking about what's happening with Object Desktop in 2008.  2008 will be the single biggest change to the product since its release.

Here are some highlights:

Two versions

In 2008 there will be two editions of Object Desktop:

Object Desktop normal which will remain $49.95 and it will include:

  • Object Desktop LaunchPad
  • WindowBlinds
  • IconPackager
  • DeskScapes
  • DesktopX
  • SoundPackager
  • Theme Manager
  • MyColors with 3 premium themes included

And there will then be:

Object Desktop Ultimate Edition which will be $69.95 and add:

  • TweakVista
  • WindowFX
  • SkinStudio
  • IconDeveloper
  • StyleVista (new program in development)
  • LogonStudio Vista
  • ObjectBar
  • RightClick
  • Keyboard LaunchPad

ALL current users of Object Desktop at the time that 2008 edition is launched will be upgraded to Ultimate Edition.

Another big change is that the user experience of Object Desktop is going to dramatically improve. Gone will be the days of a new user simply getting a serial # and being expected to download Stardock Central to get started.  Instead, a user will download a complete Object Desktop package which will allow them to easily upgrade to updates versions.

The inclusion of MyColors is a pretty big deal as well in that now users will be able to much more easily add new premium themes.  What we'll be doing is that every so often we'll add an additional premium MyColors theme to every active Object Desktop account. So the longer someone is an Object Desktop user, the more stuff they get.

Stay tuned.

To put any renewal price changes in perspective:

Consumer Price Index for:
October 1997: 161.5
October 2007: 210.177 (30% increase)

Inflation calculator:
1996: $35
2006: $44.79 (28% increase)

Proposed cost of an Object Desktop renewal:
1998: $35
2008: $39.95 (14% increase)

Even at $45 it would be in line with inflation. A $5 hike isn't that much.

Oh, and for amusement's sake - the price of oil
October 1997: $19.20
October 2007: $77.56 (304% increase)

And lets not forget people who live in Europe.

The £ is now worth 23% more than in 1999 (it was 28% last month) and the Euro is worth an impressive 41% more since 1999.

LOL. Happy Camper has been around less than 6 months and presume to lecture others about the value of this stuff.

Maybe Happy Camper should go pick up a copy of Style XP. It hasn't been updated in years but at least they haven't increased their price right? Isn't that what matters?

In this case shouldn't it be a green-noser anyway.

You people are funny. I`ve thought about this and I've come up with this --It's just typical buisness,(I'm not saying this company) But,most companies make huge profits by paying employees little, inventing false rising overhead, and alot of our problems (and a very BIG one) is governments running over we the people.

In response to Greenreaper------- WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU HAD TO CHANGE THE OIL IN YOUR COMPUTER?

Sounds like an opportunity for you to start your own company, pay employees big salaries and sell your products at incredibly low prices that never increase regardless of whether the costs for everything you depend on go up.

I look forward to purchasing your product.

Could you give us an approximate idea of when OD2008 will released? Also, what programs, if any, will be dropped? Finally, what can we expect as regards MyColors?
on Dec 24, 2007

I don't think any programs are going to be dropped from Ultimate.

Target date: March 2008.

With regards to MyColors:

Expect a few premium inspired themes each year.  I think content is going to take an increasingly important role as we go forward. I think it's going to be key to be able to demonstrate what is possible with this kind of technology.

Sounds good. Thanks for the quick response.

Anyone who thinks Stardocks stance is unfair should just think one thing - Where do I get as much enjoyment from a piece of software other than this? For the price, it's amazing value and the things it does are equally amazing
on Dec 25, 2007
What annoys me is they are using the new package to hide the fact they are raising the price. I have a thing against marketing gimmicks. In reality we are going to have the current Object Desktop then we have Object Desktop basic, what they call them is a little different. By the way I could never get a job in marketing, it would never work for me.

Now add cursorfx and object dock+, and I might change my tune. By the way, why where these not include in Object Desktop, they look like they would belong to me.

Ohh, and I never saw an official upgrade price 5 bucks is different than 20 buck.

Just to be clear I am personnally not trying to bash stardock, but I was reading all the talk about how wounderfull the new 2008 is going to be and all I could see different for me was the price, so I was just sharing my view.

Ohh, and I never saw an official upgrade price 5 bucks is different than 20 buck.

The upgrade is $0.

Please, can someone explain the complaining? Peple with Object Desktop pay zilch for Object Desktop Ultimate.
