I thought I was the target audience

Let me first say that I think The Sims 2 is really good as a game product. Great graphcis, great production values, great attention to detail.

But I don't seem to get it.  First off, it strikes me as unforgiveable that the game doesn't feature a "go back 1 day" type feature so that if a key sim dies (like the guy I've spent 2 days building up) because of a ghost or some other silly thing that I can go back and try to correct it.  Sure, it's not realistic, give me the option still.

Secondly, I didn't play the first one. I.e. Sims 1. So as a result, I don't understand a lot of what I have to do. The manual for The Sims 2 seems almost as if you are have expected to have played the first one.  For instance, throwing parties. A big thing in the game. Yet I have no idea what the key to a good party is. It suggests a buy a "bar". Where do I get a bar? I couldn't find one in my list of things (probably in there somewhere).

It is very addictive but it is just incredibly frustrating that a Sim can seemingly die for no reason.

Let me give you my first experience here with The Sims 2. I have no previous experience:

I load up the game and spend about an hour building my own family. There's tools to make it so you can have people that look like your real family and after a long time, I managed to get a pretty good visual representation of my family in there.

Within 2 minutes though, a fire breaks out in the kitchen. I click on the fire and choose extinguish. He doesn't do it and my Sim dies. (I later find out I have to click on the fire icon at the top left). I exit out and come back in to see if I can restart. Nope, my guy seems to be dead.

Okay, I start over. Rebuild the family (not quite as detailed this time) and get it going. Within an hour my kids have been taken away by social services because they didn't do their homework.  I try to get my kid to do his homework but he always says he's "not in the mood".  Where's the "Make kid do homework?" Did any real parents have a hand in this design? My kid never wants to do homework either but there are ways to force him to do his homework.

So again, I start over, rebuild the family again. I have my wife and I work and hire a maid and nanny. Once again, a fire breaks out and the nanny and maid die. I come home from work, call the fire department who put out the blaze. Within another 10 minutes, my wife and I are dead for some reason due to the ghosts of these two incompotents. I had nothing to do with their demise.

Remember, I'm just a newbie here. So I'm sure there's plenty of things I "should have done" but they sure didn't seem apparent to me and I design, play, and code computer games for a living.

I recognize a great game when I see one and The Sims 2 is clearly a great quality game. But I'm just having a hard time getting it I guess.

I've been trying to find a game that will suit me. So far no luck. Back in the day, I loved 7th Guest & 11th Hour. The nice basic Warlords was nice, as was Magic the Gathering. I have never been able to get into Myst. Maybe I need to do the strategy guide thing. Maybe I'll have to try this Sims thing, but it just doesn't excite me. Thanks for the write-up Draginol!

As an aside:

stands like a fucktard while fire kills him = realism? How about Autism?

wow....that was harsh...

Well, sometimes the Sims under your care are a little... slow...

Yeah... I never found the Sims to be that challenging of a game. But I did buy the Sims 2, and I am really enjoying it. Nobody in my house was ever consumed in a kitchen fire...because when one happened I thought "Hmm... maybe the Fire Department could help".

The game does take a bit of time to learn if you're new though, I remember it took me a week in the Sims (1) to figure out how to fulfill my Sims' hygiene needs. I thought that if I kept washing their hands it would be good enough .

In Memoriam (I think it has a different name in America) is very very much in the vein of the 7th Guest. Ah, I looked it up, it's possibly known as "Missing:Since January" in the US. It may be known as "Missing:", since January. . Think 7th guest style puzzles, some of which involve hunting for clues on the internet. The only downside is that as the game became more popular it got harder and harder to avoid spoilers when doing the web searches for information and clues.

As far as the Sims goes, I kinda feel I should try the new game because it's a major game release, on the other hand it sounds kinda like my exploits owning Sea Monkeys but without the career progression.

GreyWar---hilarious.

I think a lot of the importance for me in playing the Sims was to have my families live in the lap of luxury, and just make friends with other people and each other, and then I fucked with their heads and made them all fall in love and then I tried to help them pick up the pieces again

Sadistic?

JK

Anyway, as a Sims fan I am really looking forward to affording Sims 2

Thanks Frightlever, I'll check it out!

BTW: Seriously, how do you bring up the cheat console? In the game I hit Ctrl-Shift-C and I don't see any console or anything pop up.  Is there something I'm missing?
on Sep 21, 2004
I don't know what is going on Brad... maybe it is Ctrl and shift sensitive... like maybe it is specifically the right or left ctrl or shift button that opens it.
on Sep 22, 2004
I just read somewhere that the cheat console won't load if you have CursorXP turned on. Turn that off or just turn all the background apps off, apparently if the key combo is used in any other running programs, it won't work on Sims2.
on Sep 22, 2004
If that is the reason, that would be sort of ironic actually.
on Sep 22, 2004
Oh man, that's ironic.  INdeed, I do run CursorXP.

the console is going to be a little white box at the very top of your screen (I actually had to do it twice to notice it). Even if you have extensive experience with the first Sims game, this is really one of the titles where you need the Strategy Guide until someone drops a nice FAQ on the web. I hate that as well but I spent a LOT of time on the first one as that was the only way I could bond with my wife and play games and I still had to look things up when I got the new one.

On parties:
I've thrown several "Roof Raisers" and never used the bar but here are my keys to success...
1. Buy a buffett table (in the same menu as bar)
2. Have plenty of places to sit
3. Have games (darts, chess)
4. Have a stereo
5. Use the phone to "throw party" and invite your guests
6. Click the buffet table to "serve food" just as the guests arrive
7. turn the radio on and mingle. The rest should take care of itself.

Hope this helps

Does The Sims 2 have the secret celebrity guest that tells you how good your party was like "House Party" did?
on Sep 22, 2004
No, you get a score based on the party. They don't have the "official" celebrities like Drew Carey yet. The good news is there is no theiving mime either.

Draginol:

Guess what? The cheat codes don't work in Sims 2 because of a conflict with a piece of software I *KNOW* you have on your computer. Yep, it's your very own Cursor XP. Dunno how or why, but having CursorXP enabled prevents the cheat code dialogue from coming up in Sims 2.

Anyhoo... My biggest complaint so far is that if it were as hard to have a baby and raise an infant as the game shows, we'd have landfills full of dead mothers and babies and nobody would ever "woohoo" out of fear. I had a very healthy Sim die while she was pregnant because she passed out on the couch from lack of sleep, and then starved to death. Apparently the couch didn't provide as much energy as she was losing, so she literally was unable to rest enough to get up. And she didn't even have a job - I'd been trying to FORCE her to eat and sleep but she refused to do so.
