Brad Wardell's views about technology, politics, religion, world affairs, and all sorts of politically incorrect topics.

This likely won’t make the final cut into the game because it’s too much for new users. But for those of you interested in the lore of Elemental and how races, factions, and allegiances work under the covers:

image

In beta 1Z and beyond there will only be three included races: Men, Trogs and Urxen.

But for those of you in the current beta, we have it sub-divided out much further.

The race of men long ago were split into two parts – west and east.

The west fought the Titans and lived on the fringes of civilization due constant wars with the much more powerful Titans and their allies. The east served the Titans until Amarian (the Emperor) rose up with the might of his empire in the east and allied himself with the Elas’nir in the final battle. After the cataclysm, the remnants of his empire fled to the west to escape from the wrath of the Fallen and the Krax (men who remained loyal to the Titans).

Amarian’s people aren’t a race per se, they’re really just a collection of people from the east and hence aren’t particularly distinct.

On the east, there are two distinct races.  The Mancers and the Ironeers.   The Mancers are by far the most common with Altar, Capitar and Tarth (once part of Capitar) of that race. In later days, Altar becomes a predominantly Amarian but that story is for a different day.

But like I said, in the actual game, we are going to treat races as species and have just men, Trogs (Fallen), and Urxen (Fallen).

There are other races in the game (Dragons, Trolls, Sions, Darklings, etc.) but they aren’t social or numerous enough to make a playable race.

If a Fallen falls in the forest. . .does it corrupt the bunnies?

Good to see some more lore. It's been flowing fast and furious lately, which is great stuff.

(Still going to be playing Fallen though. )

Edits: Um. . .replaced 'hears' with 'falls'. Dubya tee eff, brain?

This is the tree for men. Not The Fallen.

Frogboy- We are complaining about criticizing the following statements:

But like I said, in the actual game, we are going to treat races as species and have just men, Trogs (Fallen), and Urxen (Fallen).

Unless there is a Trog and an Urxen Kingdom (which this tree and the second quote above do not indicate), that would seem to indicate that Fallen only have those 3 races, unless he mis-stated that quote or something changes.

Personally I'd like to see at least ONE non-human Kingdom, and at least 4 unique races in the fallen (for a total of 5 non-human races), but it appears that we will have to rely on modding for this (which is fine in the long-run, but many people will want to play the stock game, and I personally feel having a limited race selection really limits the possibilities for the game... It's still possible to get an A- in my book, but with more races, it could have gotten an A+)

EDIT: Upon re-reading my post it does sound a bit harsh... The game will be great regardless.... I (and I assume most of the others who have posted similar criticisms) are just trying to provide an idea of what we would like to see, and what we feel will improve the game (and make you more money to invest in the next great game). Obviously your going to do what you feel is best, and in no way do I mean to say "I am right and you are wrong"

In other words, there will be another Tree for the Fallen, perhaps one for each fallen race.  A whole forest.

At least for those capable of seeing said Forest for the Trees. lol

Sorry. Couldn't help myself. It's the twitch. I swear.

Actually, we had this debate a few months ago when they dropped the "Only Humans as playable races" bomb. A lot of us over-reacted (me included) and tensions started running pretty high here on the forums. It took Frogboy to go back and break it down and show us that there are actually a Lot of "Species" in the game, plus playable/recruit-able monsters and magical creatures. Even though it might not "sound like it" in certain explanations there IS going to be quite a bit of variety in what "races" we have in our Empires and Kingdoms especially once you throw in all the monsters we'll be able to recruit. Take Trolls for example. Trolls don't have their own Faction, per say, but they can be drafted into your armies, controlled with magic, maybe even bribed. Trolls aren't the only creature that will work this way either. There's lots of other roaming monsters the player may be able to add to their forces.

Also, the bottom line is, any Race you can possibly think of can be Modded into the game. They may not have included "actual" elves and dwarves and gnomes and such, but we have Human variants that might as well be them. Ironeers are modeled after Dwarves obviously.

With Frogboy clarifying this Tree covers only the Races of Men, I don't think any of us have anything to fear about the Fallen races not showing up, they will just in a different Tree, they aren't removed.

So, just to clarify even further, just because we'll only have Men (Fallen are a different form of Men) as a playable Race that can form a faction, the game won't be limited to just Mankind. We'll have all sorts of Magical beings in our Kingdoms and Empires. Also we'll be able to institute breeding programs to make fantastical races of our own during game-play or we'll be able to easily Mod in the things we may think were left out.

Correct.  If I remember the discussion, the 'Fallen' are non-human creations.  Examples of Fallen could include orcs, trolls, dark elves, werewolves, and Republicans.  O wait!  I didn't mean that.  I meant to say 'Texans'.  no no no ....I, um, err....that came out wrong.  It is spelled French.  Arrrgh!

Fallen is a lot more complex because unlike Men, they're made up of multiple species.  Fallen is the term given to races that were created by the Dred'nir. There are a lot of them.

DO NOT encourage the rich evil business types to make themselves even richer. They don't need help finding new ways to milk us of our money!!!

Loving the Lore for the game, i need a new Lore to sink my teeth into after digesting all of Tolkien's lore

Is the campaign story taking place from the point of view of a specific race?

on Apr 12, 2010

I'm going to guess you play as procipinee's faction.  There's been a lot of story focus on her in the dev journals.

If fallen are made up of a lot of different races, then where do the Magnar fall in? Are they merely a rare race, an aristocracy of sorts, that rules over a Plebian Class of Trogs?

As well as the Wraiths ... are they simply a Vampiric Upper Class with no connection to their Urxen (or Trog) plebians?

And what is the big difference between Urxen and Trog anyways? I thought for sure that Magnar were more distinct from the both of them.

on Apr 12, 2010

Okay, so I took another look at the Leaderheads for the Empires. Something tells me that the Urxen and Wraiths are "both" Urxen (goblins) with magical tendencies, and the Wraiths focus more on stealth/poisons the like.

Meanwhile, Trogs and Magnar are both Trogs, however Magnar are more sinister, and rely on beast companions and mystical armor, while Trogs are more brutish and rely on their brute strength of force to win the day.

Did I get anywhere close?

Man is the Weakest, Urxen are half-way (but good with magic), and Trogs are the strongest. The "trog" trogs even stronger physically, while the "Magnar" trogs use trickery, enchantments, and harmony with demon-beasts (like demon-bears).
