Brad Wardell's views about technology, politics, religion, world affairs, and all sorts of politically incorrect topics.

Someone asked me recently if there were any activities that I had had to put aside that I really missed.  The answer was easy: blogging about social issues.

People now take politics very seriously and some people, mostly liberals to be honest, take politics extremely personally.  Conservatives and liberals can be very passionate in their beliefs but in my experience, liberals are a lot more likely to hate someone for having a different ideology than themselves.

One of the sites I used to hang out regularly was Quarter to Three.  But once the regulars learned I was politically conservative and started reading my blog, some of them (just some) started to become militantly opposed to me on all topics.  If you want a taste of the political views of the regulars there, go here.

I enjoy discussing politics but I must confess, I’m not passionate about it.  I couldn’t imagine going to a rally or a protest march or anything about that. I’m as interested in debating politics as I am in debating Protoss vs. Terran strategies which means, I’m pretty interested in discussing and debating it but it has no real deep seated meaning to me one way or the other.

But other people take it very seriously. They get very angry and it takes up a major part of their emotional identity.

As I’ve become more “notable” I’ve had to largely cut down on my postings because the media has been inclined to take bits and pieces about what I write and senationalize it.  So I’ve had to become much more careful about what I say online.  Such is life.

I do believe that ideology matters a great deal in the bigger scheme of things. I care a lot about the political ideologies of our elected representatives – they control the men with guns.  But I can’t imagine disliking a private citizen for their political beliefs unless they were shoving those beliefs down my throat (i.e. if I’m at a concert, don’t make me sit through a tirade on how much you hate some politician).

I know what you mean Brad. I have a few friends that are the polar opposite of my political leanings, yet we get along fine. It's only a small part of who we really are (magnified on the political forums). But I do see more and more of what you describe... people taking it way too personally. That's unfortunate because it shuts the dialog down. More than ever ideas need to be communicated. One doesn't have to agree.

As far as liberals go, I believe the recently louder voice that conservatives have been expressing, truly worries them. The conservatives have always been there, mostly quiet, allowing the left free reign in expressing their voice. People are getting tired of the name calling, insinuations of low intelligence or worse, racism, and they have had enough. I visited "Mediamatters" site yesterday, and the banter is outrageous. Now I know that there are conservative counterpart site, but they don't have the deep-pocket, sugar daddies like George Soros, helping to fund them. And they rail against the rich? Like there are no rich Democrats or something. The rhetoric just seem more hateful from the people that are expressing there compassion for the have-not's in the country (and the world for that matter).

Without question these political times seem to be the most polarized I have ever recalled. When the sitting president calls for a group, based on their race, to "punish" their (common) enemies (other fellow Americans) at the polls, we have really lost control.

I really miss your social and political commentary.  I freely admit it was your articles in 2004 that brought me to joe User.  And while the quantity of postings has declined a lot, it is still my blog site.

I understand your point and agree with the reasoning behind it.  But that does not make it any less a sad fact of life.

Honestly, businesswise it's probably the best decision, though it's regrettable.

Given what I've seen from you politics-wise, I think Boortz is the radio talking head that you'd get along best with.  He infuriates me much of the time, but sometimes he's right.

And this is coming from someone who probably heavily disagrees with you and is a pain in the arse on the Elemental forums.

Yea, I know. Things like boycotting companies just of their CEO's political beliefs must end.
