When deciding what to invest in going forward, one thing that I know many software developers are seriously looking at is the ubiquitous potential of iOS.  Right now, it is confined to two form factors – a tablet and a handheld.  But there is nothing stopping it from becoming a fairly universal OS, potentially supplanting Windows in the long-run.

This is not something I’d like to happen. But I see it as becoming increasingly likely.

Quoting Dr Guy, reply 4As long as Bill Gates has a hand in MS, it will not happen (Windows is not the best, it just has the best Marketing).  Once he has retired, I would not bet against another OS taking over.

Hasn't he been retired for over 2 years now?

if you think he is not pulling the strings.....I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you!

To people complaining about Windows being insecure. Remember it's the most popular. The people who write viruses/trojans etc want to target as many people as they can so, for the moment, they mainly target Windows machines. I'm sure if everybody used Ubuntu or OS X (Which, despite being popular, still most certainly is not the majority OS) you'd very soon see serious security flaws being exploited again and again. I think it'll be interesting if Apple eventually gain market dominance (which i hope they don't, incidentally) just how secure their stuff really is.

Notice that I didn't say Windows *is* insecure but that Windows is hard to secure.

The reality is that security is a process, not a product. Linux has been used in publicly accessible, mission critical situations for many years and because of this it has a culture of security driving it's development.

Microsoft hasn't taken security processes seriously with Windows until fairly recently. It's been most successful as a client technology and as a server on internal networks.
