What television series would you recommend to someone to start from scratch?

For instance, I’ve never watched Lost but I don’t think I could handle 7+ years or whatever it was of shows mainly because I heard the show ended up like X-Files where the creators were kind of winging it.

Any suggestions?

Homeland, Dexter, Justified (into the 4th season now with every season being good), Firefly, BSG.

re: boardwalk empire - season 1 was exceptional, season 2 was a POS (imo), and season 3 started to get things back on track.

If you could only pick 1, I would wholeheartedly suggest homeland.

I've seen worse... like the time somebody dragged up the one about Moses getting up to no good in the bulrushes with that Egyptian piece with the big smile

And then was that one complaining about Ugg n sharing the wooly mammoth he slew with the rest of the tribe... why anybody dragged that one up when it had already been eaten beats me.

Anyway, Haven is another good un... based on Stephen King's Colorado Kid

Last Resort.  I've seen previews of this and it looks quite interesting.  It's about a nuclear sub captain who's given orders to launch missiles.  When he doesn't the sub is attacked by not so friendly friendly fire.

I hope you will enjoy it as with a lot of the fans here. It was cancelled but it was allowed to finish/wrap up at the 13th episode...

That's the thing, isn't it!   TV execs cancelling this that and whatever inside he first season if its viewer base falls below expectations, just to replace it with something else and repeat the process all over again... and again.... and again.  No wonder viewers become disenchanted and lose interest in network TV.  All too often they get involved in a TV series just to have it yanked from under them and replaced with some cheap-to-make reality crap.

For mine, the TV execs are sabotaging their own positions by doing this, and sooner or later their impatience for ratings will be their own downfall, as more and more viewers reject network TV and turn to more reliable forms of entertainment... DVDs, games, quality family time.  I have mostly given the Australian TV ntworks the flick because of over-advertising, show cutting and too much reality/lifestyle garbage.  I rarely sit in front of the TV to watch network television anymore, and I'm not alone.  There's probably 4 or 5 shows of interest to me currently, but for the most part it's DVDs [rented or owned] of stuff I really want to see.

SO, TV EXECS, WAKE THE F**K UP AND STOP BETRAYING THE VIEWERS WHO ARE YOUR BREAD AND BUTTER WITH THESE TOO FREQUENT CANCELLATIONS... IDIOTS!!!!

Wow, Last Resort sounds interesting. Perhaps worth of a look. I dont really mind one season shows, over the past couple of years i saw quite a lot of them - Firefly, Odyssey 5, Flash Forward, Event, Invasion, Surface, Alcatraz and few others... most of them were really good, so i was i unhappy to see/find them canned, but you can look at the thing from another perspective: at least it happened before they managed to screw them up with later development  . There were definitive shows in the past, which would be so much better, if followed same destiny, especially Andromeda and Earth Final Conflict come to mind - brilliant and promising first season, but the rest of the show utter shit.

Anyway, i can definitely recommend Breaking Bad - i was kinda hesitant to start watching it, as i usually prefer sci-fi over contemporary real-world stuff - but missing on this one because of that attitude would be a huge, monumental mistake. It is soooo incredible, absolutely stunning. I absolutely love shows which leave you every episode with a massive cliffhanger and BB is exactly like that. Its only interesting, it is able to do this to me without having any aliens, spaceships, some kind of sci-fi related mystery or a conspiracy..or Olivia Dunham  ...instead it relies on clever dialogues, deep characters and really intense situations. I would not be surprised if at one point in future it will be considered to be the best show of current decade.

Hm.  No mention of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia?  I never fail to laugh at that show.

I saw on Netflix that there are like 7 seasons!

I also enjoyed Revolution on NBC.  I guess it will be back on soon..  but I recently discovered that another show that I liked was cancelled...besides Alcatraz...  The Finder.

Ah well.  I'm still pissed that NBC(?) cancelled The Black Donnelly's

I'm currently going to watch every Star Trek episode from every series.  For some reason I am starting with Voyager.  I watched the first few season when it was originally aired, but I think I then went to college and missed the rest.  I'm re-watching them now and they are surprisingly good, I figured they would be the worst of them all, but I'm into the third season and really enjoying myself.  I think I will watch DS9 after I'm done with Voyager, I missed most of those as they aired too.

I just finished doing that. Well, mostly. I skipped Enterprise because I saw that recently, and TOS as that is just to dated for me. So I just watched TNG, DS9, and Voyager. I followed this guide to watch them in chronological order, though I did skip a few that were particularly bad.
