A thread over at the Democratic Underground asks what makes you proud to be an American.  The answers provide an answer as to why so many people have doubts about the patriotism of the left.

After reading some of the stuff there I'm really glad that I'm neither a democrat, aliberal or a subscriber of their brand of trash!

You could never be in that bunch.  You have a brain that works.

Not according to some people around here.

Good blog etiquette would be to give a tip of the hat to Instapundit or whoever linked you to this. I suspect you don't read any liberal sites at all much less the Democratic Underground.

You do have to give them a slight pass because of the context. I'm not in any of these circlej*rk politics boards but I used to be pretty into a Buffy the Vampire Slayer discussion board, and I know that if you ask a question like "what do you like about Buffy" *within the group*, you will get a much different answer than if you ask them outside or at work. Instead of just saying, "Spike's cheekbones," you'll modulate your answer thinking, "Everyone's heard of the cheekbones, and half the people think anyone who still likes Spike is just a fangirl," so you'll say, "The fact that Angel hasn't tripped over his own trenchcoat in three episodes" or something that will make people think you're still interesting.

So in this case, you can't just say, "I love our freedom" like you would if you were talking to someone from overseas. You know half the people there will think you're blowing off their wiretapping concerns and are a closet Republican. So you engage in some public communication and modulate to "I love the freedoms we have left." Sounds like unnecessary, unpatriotic qualification to the ousider, but that's not who it's intended for.

That's answer A. Answer B is, "If Republicans questioned my heterosexuality as much as they question my patriotism, I'd start making love to goats. If patriotism makes you vote Republican, there must be something wrong with it." I seriously would call my own mother an off bitch if everybody kept telling me I had to say "I love you" or give aid and comfort to the enemy.

Uh, you turned off anonymous comments on the post above this one, but there's no link telling you how to register. The "Reply" link does nothing and the user doesn't know why. If you want more users registered on your site I think you should change the design to encourage them or at least enable them to register.

(I'm using Firefox if that has an effect on the broken Reply button.)

OMG! Those are some scarey comments.

Quit trying to sound intelligent and politically savvy Draginol.

Republicans are a bigger threat to our safety, security, and well being than I could ever imagine. The constitution is under large scale assault right now in this country and it isn't a liberal or conservative thing it is about loving your country and not wanting our core values tossed out the window. There is hope though, freedom minded people are relocating to New Hampshire in record numbers and Bush's freedom breaking policies like the RealID act are being tossed out of New Hampshire like a bucket of sewage.

It is unbelievable how many republicans are going along for the ride and allowing our core values to be trashed, sickening.

sickening.

Yes, mind numbed robots like you are sickening.  You present no facts, just talking points, and then wonder why intelligent people dont follow you.  Sorry, we are not buying your snake oil.

Dr. Guy: I'm not presenting talking points, and I don't seem to be getting anywhere either.

Just gotta' quote that, it's one of the few posts at JU I wholeheartedly agree with.

It's not Rep. v. Dem. and it is about a Constitutional Crisis.

Noumenon, my comments were not directed to you.

Actually, if you've read Draginol's blog much at all, you'd know he surveys DU regularly, Far more regularly than I do, at least, as I have no time to read the rantings of angry socialists who are still lamenting the fall of the Berlin Wall.

I dunno, Draginol, I only read up to reply 40-something, and Im sure there's nastiness buried in the thread somewhere, but from what I read it really didn't look all that bad. - Little Whip

I agree. Keep that base polarized Draginol, give some better examples of 'liberals' one would love to hate.

"Noumenon, my comments were not directed to you."

That's what I was talking about. Big rambly counterargument, on theme to the post? No comments. Driveby, kneejerk Republican bashing? That gets comments. Your comment says "No", but your attention says "yes." (I'll stop whining now.)

That's weird. I guess there are some liberals who listen to Rush Limbaugh, for something to hate. What a waste of time!

Now that you mention it I do remember a post about whether JoeUser.com was becoming the equivalent of the Democratic Underground, which of course it isn't or I wouldn't be here.

Who says I hate DU?  I find the people there endlessly amusing.

There are people out there who watch Dharma and Greg in sindication. Which is worse?
