Crunch time in action
Published on December 15, 2006 By Draginol In Life Journals

The joke at Stardock is that in the summer we might as well  be in the landscaping business. Things get so easy going.

But the Winter gets different. That's our busy season and this year is especially busy with Windows Vista on the way, the need to get Galactic Civilizations Gold Edition (GalCiv + Dark Avatar) put together for manufacturing for Walmart and elsewhere, and just the company's rapid growth has shown that our company structure hasn't scaled very well.

To that end, I have a list of 42 things I need to get done by Friday. And it became clear by Thursday that that was not going to happen unless I simply didn't stop working until the end of the day Friday.

I normally am awake for 16 hours each day.  I spend a solid 3 hours of that 16 hours in bed -- awake.  2 of those hours are reading and the other is just laying there thinking I should get up but not able to.

I got to the office today at around 11am (I had worked until 2am the night before).  I've had half a can of coke, that's the only caffeine I've had so far.

It's now 6:09am the next day. 5 more hours and it'll be 24 hours.  I only expect to be up around 36 hours so it's not like I'm doing anything really insane here. There's lots of people who have been up a lot longer during busy times. I once was up for 42 hours straight and last year I was up for 38 hours finishing GalCiv II.

Anyway...

Hour 20:

No significant effects yet due to being tired other than yawning more.  I did just go to the store to pick up some Pepto. My tummy (er, I mean my GUT WORM) has been bugging me for the past few weeks and being up has not helped that. I never can tell what is the best over the counter solution for an upset stomach. I don't get them often so I'm not really up on that.

I did notice that my Lasik-induced halos were more noticeable (a lot more) when I was driving. Not sure if that's because my eyes are dry or due to being tired.

My depth perception is a bit off.  And my analytical abilities are definitely off a tad (i.e. I'm getting a bit sloppy).

No fatigue though (I  mean, I work at a software company, not much physical exertion there).

More to come... gotta get back to coding.

My halos come back when my eyes are dry.  Keep some moisturizing solution at work.  It sure helps me!

Oooh, I've done this. It's not fun, but...well, despite the whole "crunch never works" philosophy espoused by certain peoples, I feel that I've done some of my best work while crunching, because I never really get out of the zone.

Crunch definitely works. It's just not desireable.  There's a good 20% or so loss in capability after 20 hours or so but there is a definite net gain.

Did you know you're wearing your underwear on your head?

Take 20 minute time outs every few hours. Its amazing how long one can go efficiently when you clear your head and think about nothing for 20 mins every once in a while.

It works for me

Nothing like working until 3am and getting a nice, hot breakfast afterwards.

Sounds like you're working yourself to the grave! You need to hire more help if your business is growing. What's to life if you have all that money but can't enjoy it? I am a professional developer, don't get pay a lot but at least I have my time with family & friend & what not. Maybe I can run your company for you From the looks of things, it appears that Stardock is at a cusp that it need a dedicated management team or a dedicated manager who can run the operation (whether you or someone else). It appears that you got your hands in every facet of the business. Not exactly good if your business is growing. Eventually it will reach a point where it can't grow because of this micro management style.

Stardock has a dedicated management team. But there are times in every business where you have to put in long hours.
