Yesterday Stardock released DeskScapes 1.0, the extension to Windows DreamScene (animated wallpaper feature for Windows Vista Ultimate) that allows it to use .dream files which have a lot more capability.

And in less than 24 hours, over 60,000 copies of it were downloaded and the initial 3 .dream files received thousands of downloads.

Next week, Object Desktop users will get an exclusive look at some of the first dynamic wallpaper.

With so much interest in so little time, it's pretty apparent that animated wallpaper is here to stay.

To get DeskScapes visit http://dream.wincustomize.com.

It's been on the skinners' 'wish-list' for eons ....

I'll echo that.

I remember the days of trying to use a giant animated .gif on the Active Desktop (which usually made the whole system crash after about 30 seconds of trying to run it), and some of the horrible and crippling programs that hit the 'net shortly after "The Matrix" was released where people were trying to emulate that scrolling green funky text on the desktop. Actually, remembering it now makes my sking crawl a little.

This is so much more elegant and hardware-friendly. Stardock rocks! (And I guess someone should give MS at least a little credit for finally moving into the 21st century and making all this possible.)

Wow!  I'm really impressed... going to have to install it pretty soon then, just to keep up with the rush!

If Aero can be done in XP with Windowblinds, can Dreamscene be made for XP as well? Or is there a licensing aspect to the MS/Stardock agreement that prevents you from making such a thing? I'd love this in XP...

curiosity is a little different from true mass interest. i'm not judging or anything, but after seeing the couple low resolution busy examples to kick off the product (and i downloaded every one), im not terribly impressed or overwhelmed, and in fact back to a single frame background. hopefully some subtle dynamic backgrounds will change my opinion, or just really well done high res-widescreen videos.

There hopefully will be improvements in it's stability. It seems to lock up my video driver, and when it does that it (Vista) recovers but turns the screen black. I'm using the latest nVidia Vista driver (Version: 97.46).
on Feb 15, 2007

97.46 is far from the latest nvidia driver.  They have some 100 series Vista ones I believe.

Your instability problems will be a problem that nvidia need to fix.  Their drivers are not where they should be currently.
