What an awful day it was today. It started well. One of our key developers is leaving to go to Microsoft whic is a bummer but we had a last day lunch and movie (saw Van Helsing which was pretty good). Then it all went down hill.

Various technical problems - Stardock Central messing up, can't make news items via our internal news syndication system, and other minor mishaps.

And then the contract negotations with publishers on one of our upcoming games. I'm faced with some unpleasant choices. Got one offer with a huge advance on royalties but one that pretty much assumes we won't ever see any additional royalties due to the way the deal is structured. And it would demand that we give up a lot of control over the game which we normally don't do (on GalCiv we took care of the on-line support, sold teh game directly, and put out lots of updates).  The other deal lets us have that freedom but have a much more modest advance and is from a smaller publisher so it won't likely sell anywhere near as many copies.

But negotiations are always tense and when you're dealing with six figure payments, they're quite intense. I feel exhausted and demoralized since I just don't know what the right path to do is. It's the classic freedom/less money vs. less freedom/money scenario. And it's easy for me to answer for myself what I'd choose but I have to think of the welfare of our employees and our customers and frankly, our customer community.

Speaking strictly as a consumer of your products, I am sure you will make the right choices. Your company has always impressed me with the directions you have chosen for your games/apps and the philosphy you use when dealing with us as customers.. It is the main reason I continue to cough up my hard-earned dollars for your software.

Ah, don't worry, just take a deep breath and remember that for every bad day you have...eventually a good one will probably show up...

Take the money and run old boy, but make sure the company that you are dealing with clearly states that they are responsible for any actions which have the potential to aggrieve customers. I am sure you will be able to identify any negative parts of their proposed plans for the project. Once you have, make sure someone else is accountable!

I realise that this is a decision that only you can make, but (I'm presuming) you do have a great existing customer base already, which is ever expanding. Right?

Personally, I'd go for the more freedom/less money choice... just for the sake of knowing that you are still in control of yor own product.
And it may turn out that you make more money (eventually) than the sum you're being offered now. I don't envy the decision you have to make... tough one.
I'd hate to make/invent something, and have it become a big hit..... only to lose control of the royalties it may generate.

I'm sure you'll get the decision right when the time comes.

Like greywar, I also like your business ethic, and will continue to be a consumer/user of your products, because of the great support infrastucture you have.

Sorry to hear about the loss of the developer, and I hope it all gets back to some semblance of normality for you soon....

Good luck!
