It's not easy finding a hobby
Published on June 19, 2007 By Draginol In Life Journals

I've taken up beekeeping as some of you know. And I'm realy enjoying it.

The gotcha is that you're not supposed to mess with the bees very often. I find myself going out there and opening up the hive nearly every day which is a big no no (because it really disturbs them apparently) but what kind of hobby is one that you only go out there every few weeks?

I've tried to get into cars a bit. Ever since I got my Jaguar S-Type R, I've started appreciating cars more. But it's hard to find a decent car talk community and the ones I have found are full of pretty infantile people or people who can't afford anything beyond say a Mustang and hence want to crap on anything that costs more than $30,000.

For those of you reading this, what sorts of hobbies do you have outside the computer?

I like working with my hands.

So my favorite hobbies are gardening and stained glass.  Cutting the glass, grinding it, soldering, all of it is relaxing to me...and I have great unique gifts to share with people.

You're right tho.  I wouldn't want a hobby that I could only do once every few weeks.  Maybe you could get a total of 14 hives...then you could check on one every day.

I recently read an article while at the dentist office.  It said the bee population is almost crippled here in the US.  I wouldn't mind having one of those little hives on the back of my property for my apple trees and flowers.

I've been crocheting for years, and my roommate taught me to knit last week. I want to learn how to make my own books and different bindings and such. That looks like fun.

I tried to keep plants once, but discovered that I have a black thumb and I thought I should stop torturing the plant world and just buy flowers for my mom since she knows how to keep them alive.

I have found beekeeping a lot easier than I had expected.

First off, I've yet to get stung and I normally do stuff with the hives without anything but t-shirts and shorts and no smoker.  You can, literally, sit right in front of the hive and the bees will just come back and forth.  So getting a little hive for your garden is something I really think would be cool.

Gardening is something I think I could get into. I'd like to have a walk out garden at our next house. I like growing things (I think that's what I like about the bees - I like watching them succeed, I don't really care about honey).  If I could find a good place here at my house, I'd get a bee hive here too.  As soon as the hive got big, I'd juts split it and take the new bees somewhere else so that the at home hive stayed small.

For me it is my miniature ponies. This year I have a gorgeous bouncing foal from Jack and Biscuit. He is fiesty, strong and very stubborn, just like his dad. He should make about 30in at the shoulder.

I can lie in the field for hours just being with them while they graze around me with an occassional nudge telling me to get out of the way. (Picture - lying on the grass, a blade of grass in your mouth, staring off into the clear blue sky with 4 little ponies grazing alongside you and one little pet sheep too, very relaxing.)

I also go to the odd show, purely for fun not for the serious side of it. I get a lot of fun and pleasure from spending time with them.

Outside in the world!? Agh! I can't stand all of that light! Anyway, back in Rochester I started a Knights of Columbus chapter on my campus. They're a Catholic fraternal organization, and it's a great way to make friends that are not simply temporary or based on being in a class together and working on homework together. It's a way that I can get out and help out in the community and live my faith as well as having fun.

As for outdoor activities, I love golf and camping. I plan to take the family out camping at least twice this summer, not including my time spent as a Cub Scout leader in our local church. I'll return to golfing after my graduate course is over in August. Maybe my wife will get me some clubs as a graduation present.

Indoor recreation? I love racquetball. I stink at basketball and other indoor sports.

Non-sports activities: singing, reading, and playing with my kids.

Gardening is something I think I could get into.

I love putting a little plant in the dirt and imagining what it will look like, and then watching it get there. (And if I had my own bees...my garden would really thrive!)

I also like the challenge. Ohio is all clay so I had to figure out how to grow what I wanted DESPITE the ground I had to work with (bring dirt in) and I often face off against bugs of all sorts...heh.

The all time pay off though, is watching the wild life. Last year I had so many humming birds and butterflies it was amazing. I sat on my deck and watched them flutter from flower to flower all over my yard.

It's my own little sanctuary.

If you like the outdoors and you have a handheld GPS you could look into geocaching. Geocaching is kind of like a treasure hunt using your GPS coordinates. You find a cache with small prizes. Geocaching seems to be more nature oriented. Waymarking is similiar but seems more urban and finding your location is the prize. Letterboxing is a similiar idea but you make a handcarved stamp and stamp your book and the book at the location whenever you find it. It's fun and your boys would probably enjoy it too. You can also add other nature pursuits such as birding etc. if you are already out in nature anyway.

I also run 5k's. I'm thinking about training for the White Rock half marathon in December. I also create rubber stamp and collage art. I would love to get a good camera and learn more about photography. I like to read. I play Keno with a group of gals once a month.

Oh meetup's are also pretty cool. It's a great way to find other people in your area who share your interests. Especially if it's not a common interest,

I'm thinking about starting one for mixed media collage/altered art but I haven't done it yet. It's still in the planning stage.

Oh and I was taking swing dance lessons which I really enjoyed. That would be something fun for you and Debbie to do together. I haven't gone in almost a year now .

It took me a while to settle on a hobby outside gaming and game development, but I finally did - cooking. After years of subjecting myself to terrible food because it was quick and easy and didn't get in the way of programming, I discovered the joy of making delicious food myself. And believe me, if you want to be popular with your family (both nuclear and extended), this'll do it.

I love being a theater snob lol. I like to learn about different shows and actors and I have a slightly scary soundtrack collection.

I also am in a lot of music ensembles at school and I'm really active in a music service sorority.

This summer I'm gonna try my hand at sewing. I've never done it, but my mom and sister are pretty good, so hopefully they'll help me out.

As for outdoor stuff, I used to be really into horseback riding. I found it very exciting and I loved taking care of them. However, I got really sick in high school and I wasn't allowed to ride anymore, and I've kinda forgotten how to now. Maybe I'll convince my dad to take me one weekend.

Board games are fun for me. I also play softball. I enjoy cooking. But board games is a main thing.

I knit.  A lot.  So much so that I've started to teach other people how to knit (and get paid for it, woo hoo!).  I've also started spinning and dyeing my own yarn, which I'm having lots of fun with.  I also knit a lot for other people (your littlest one is a recipient of my handiwork).

Eventually, I hope to have a Saxon wheel (one of the big traditional spinning wheels that people usually envision when they hear 'spinning yarn') and perhaps even a sheep and a llama so I can shear, wash, comb, spin, dye, knit and then wear the item.

Until then, I'll take the yarn that other people make and knit it up into items of my own design.

I haven't found an outside hobby yet, but I have been looking. I used to be really interested in radio controlled cars/planes, so that is something I'm considering again. I also am debating starting martial arts again. I'm just not sure which direction to go in.

Can Jetski be a hobby? That could be major fun at the lake house.

Anyway, if you don't get enough excitement out of bee raising you can always try bee training. If not a full-fledged conquer the world effort you could at least give them some military discipline like this: Link
