Liberals just don't like democracy
Published on October 25, 2007 By Draginol In Democrat

In the United States, liberals represent the American left. And liberals tend to be Democrats.  It has been my observation that generally speaking, liberals despise democracy. They either make use of obscure procedural tricks or the courts to get their way.

Rarely do you get to have such a great example of quintessential characteristics of a modern American liberal.  This week, David Obey, a Democrat from Wisconsin is single handedly holding up a supplemental military funding bill to pay for the war in Iraq.

How is he doing it? Thanks to internal rules for the House of Representatives (and these rules are not in the US Constitution, they're simply procedural in nature), the chairman of the appropriations committee can table bills. That is, a single individual in the house of representatives is able to decide for the entire United States what US policy is going to be.

Odds are, you didn't have a chance to vote for or against David Obey.  But no matter, he sees himself as the self appointed arbiter of US policy. You may not like Bush or the War in Iraq but the American people voted in a fair election for him to be in a position to be President who has broad powers over foreign policy given to him by the constitution.  By contrast, Obey is abusing a procedural mechanism to take on almost dictatorial powers on appropriations.

The way it is supposed to work is that the bill is put to a vote by the house of representatives (yay or nay). This way, our representatives have to go on record either supporting or opposing the bill.  But not now. Thanks to Obey, we can potentially look forward to a system in which highly partisan politicians in safe districts are embedded into choke points that can block votes.

what is so abnormal about this from the democrats. they held 270 some judges hostage for 4 years. and when the election came up they blamed it on the republicans and the voters bought it.

I was driving home yesterday, and heard one guy on the talk show saying how he voted democrat the last time, and will for the future.  Was he a liberal?  Far from it, he is a Reagan Conservative.  But he is so disgusted with what the Republicans did when they were in power, that he figures he is going to teach America a lesson.

How? By giveing them everything the democrats demand and stand for, and letting them take it to the logical conclusion.  And seeing that, perhaps enough people will get some sense and vote the bums out and elect real conservatives.

Unlike him, I am too cynical to think his idea will work.  But if enough democrats act like Obey, maybe his idea has a chance.  I am of the opinion now that it has to get worse before it will get better, and this may be another brick in the wall to that end.

This happens all the time - and it's not just Democrats. Is it BS? Yes. But by no means is it just the Democrats. The Republicans do this all the time. It's not that Democrats are undemocratic - it's that politicians are.

Provide an example.

Having the chairman of a committee using a loophole to try to effect major policy change is something new to me.

It is the naivety of the American voters that amaze me the most. The divisive partisanship in the political arena (everywhere in America for that matter) seems to come with blinders that prevent the passage of common sense. I wonder if a large stick would help any. These morons are supposed to work for us ... isn’t it is about time we made this crystal clear to them.
