Brad Wardell's views about technology, politics, religion, world affairs, and all sorts of politically incorrect topics.

If you're like me, you like USB flash memory keys.  And if you're like me, you don't keep critical documents on them because you are always painfully aware that losing a USB key is pretty easy.

SanDisk apparently has been listening and has announced two features that come with the new Cruzer Titanium Plus.

First, there's BeinSync, this new service automatically takes what you have on your USB key and securely transfers it to a secure SanDisc on-line repository. If you lose your memory key, no problem, you can get the data back.

The second, BoomerangIt, lets you track down your device if it's been lost or stolen.

Both of these require a subscription that is free for 6 months but then costs $29.99 per year.  At that price, it's a no-brainer because now you can literally have your key data with you at all times and if you lose it, it's not gone for good.

Combine this with SanDisk's U3 and you have a very potent mobile platform that you can take around with you in your pocket.

Well, I have a 512 and a 2Gb Sandisk Cruzer Micro, and they work great for me. What I usually do (I'm only using the larger drive on a day-to-day basis right now) is copy the contents of the drive to my personal computer's hard drive every couple of weeks. I don't think it's very likely that I would lose the stick or break it at the same time that my hard drive crashes. It coult happen, but I don't foresee it being a strong possibility. For some reason, I've always been leery of posting data onto online servers; it's probably an inherent distrust of "other people" controlling access to my private data. However, this strategy has worked fine for me so far. I have no complaints about the drives themselves. I've had the 512 for about two years, and it still works fine; I just outgrew its capacity.

I have a 4 Gig Cruiser with the U3 software and I love it cause it allows me to use Firefox on PCs, like at my job, where I can not install them. I, as well, back up my stick to my PC but I don't really carry anything very important. It would actually hurt more just to lose it due to the way I have it set up and having to put it to the way I like ti again can be a pain in the rear.

Can these programs also work on my cruiser? I know I can probably look it up but was wondering if you knew already. I wouldn't mind getting it if it were possible.
