Brad Wardell's views about technology, politics, religion, world affairs, and all sorts of politically incorrect topics.

Altaria has the strategic fortune of being located in the outer rim. As a result, even its handful of colonies are relatively unimportant from a strategic standpoint. The Drengin Empire had largely ignored the Altarians during the Dread Lord war of 2225. But the Dread Lords tended to put specific effort to do harm to the Altarians.

According to Altarian legend, the Dread Lords were involved on Altaria during the opening stages of the Precursor wars eons ago.  The war between the Precursors (the Arnor and the Dread Lords) nearly wiped out Altaria.  This time period is still known as the cataclysm  in which the surface of Altaria was decimated and over time, the world was recolonized bit by bit.

In the infamous "Altaria Resists" incident, the Dread Lords with Korath support were driving towards the Altarian home world in an effort to eradicate the Altarians. It is quite unlike most of the epic battles as the space it occurs in was immensely large while having relatively few planets to fight over. It was this literal distance that served as the only hope for the Altarians in keeping the Dread Lords at bay.

Nice. Have you thought about starting a T.V. series for galciv kind of like Star Trek?

Always wanted to ask about a movie or T.V. series... just look at all of the in=game movies--amazing!

Hmm, so civilization was devastated, and all that was left were a few isolated pockets that then had to recolonize the planet. So a bunch of isolated cities that each had to grow... found new cities... redevelop the land from scratch. Gee, that would provide a good setup for a TBS game... maybe even a fantasy TBS game...

As much as I love the game, the in-game movies aren't that great.

I like em Other than the starbase initial construction one that is so blurred you can hardly make out what it is LOL

Um... view the movies from their source files, from the viewer. Take, for instance, the water and speeder movie, the Dread Lords have come invasion movie, and the DL campaign intro and outro movies. Also, the alliance and military win movies.

How did this turn into a discussion of the movies? Actually, I wouldn't mind a bit more of the personal touch, i.e., "I love you Sarge." Now that I have said that, may I steer this thread back on topic.

Well written, FB. I assume that this is the setup for a new scenario. I like it. When the TA immense galaxies were introduced, the first game I set up was an immense/rare. It gives the most 'realistic' view of things, IMO. Vast distances to travel, very few useful resources of any kind; and when any of these are discovered, they are worth fighting for.

The Dread Lords, AND the Korath? I assure you, I have never typed these four letters in succession before, but OMFG. This reads like a Greek tragedy in the works.

A number of years ago, I had a wait captain that worked under me. He owned a big boa, which he named 'Julius Squeezer'. He hosted a number of parties at his house. One of these coincided with JS's feeding schedule. The stage was set: the Door's "The End" was playing, the lights were lowered, and in went the little mousie. It went about it's business, exploring it's new surroundings, until the monster became aware of it and raised it's head, flicking it's tongue in the mouse's direction. At this point, the mouse sensed it's situation, and let out a squeak. To this day, I can still hear that squeak. I have only ever learned one phrase in 'Mouse'; I assume that this phrase translates into something along the lines of: "OH SH*T!".

I can picture an Altarian astronomer, scanning the heavens for a new anomaly, and coming across this Armada, and letting out that same squeak.

I just wish that an historical background of races is implemented in the game, because it really helps enjoying more gc2.

Don't get me wrong, most of them are ok. I was mostly referring to the end game movies because they're a bit boring, that's all. I got the alliance one last night, and it just doesn't feel like a big enough reward for the effort put in for winning. Some coloured ships land on a planet and then there are fireworks? The end game movies should be much more epic than that. Think about the inauguration movie at the end of Starcraft's terran campaign (a much older game).

In case you haven't seen it: WWW Link

I know its harder to do a movie like that for a game you mostly play in sandbox mode (especially 4X), but its possible. For instance, the video could do with a voiceover about co-operation, and a bit more action wouldn't hurt. For instance, imagine the video shows a Torian freighter under attack by a small pirate ship, then a Terran ship shows up and blows the pirate out of the sky. As it does a much bigger pirate ship looms into view and launches missiles, and just when you think the Terran ship is toast, a big Drengin ship flies into the path of the missiles and takes the hit. Then both ships turn on the pirates and take them out as a team. Then cut to a Babylon 5-style starbase, which has several different ships docked to it from different races.

For the influence victory, show a human and an Arcean on a sofa, drinking a Korx brand of beer and watching some slaves fighting to the death in some kind of Drengin TV show.

Yeah, that would be great, but I'm sure the unique tech trees and improvements in TA will help with that. In Civilization when you look at an enemy city you can almost see the people wandering around and doing their thing. The Civilopedia helps too if you don't know much about those civilizations.

I like the fact that some of the speech is changed depending on who the race is talking to, but if that were fleshed out more it would be great.
