And so it begins..

I created my "Draginol" character on the Uther Pacific time-zone server.  The first day was a mess. Just total lag. Too frustrating.  Amazingly, other people apparently have a lot more patience or something because when I got on today, there were an amazing number of people who had zipped up to leve 18 or higher already.

I was in the alpha and beta of World of Warcraft.  It took me about a week of playing to get to level 15 and another 3 weeks to get to level 30.  Roughly speaking, in one day you can get up to around level 8 fairly easily if you know what you're doing. Assume a couple more days to get to level 15.  This is assuming around 4 to 6 hours of play in a given "day".

My 7 year old son is also playing. He's on as a Dwarft fighter called "Charly". He's having a blast with it. Been making use of a new internal beta of a program we're going to call Mob Master to let me control both accounts at the same time.  I have two PCs and two accounts and so when Alex isn't playing, I control both Charly and Draginol with my keyboard/mouse using Mob Master.

Some friends of mine told me that they object strongly (and note politely) to this kind of thing. Which, frankly annoys me quite a bit.  Those of us who don't have big gangs of buddies to help with quests can have (almost) the same benefit by using something like Mob Master.  Yea, some geek with bots or something could probably abuse it but that's not Mob Master's fault. I don't see how there's any problem with someone with two legitimate accounts with two legitimate characters being able to form a party that they control both characters. It's not quite as good as having an expert behind each one (since you obviously can only give commands to one player at a time) but it's definitely made some of the quests a lot easier.  It's a hellluva lot less cheesy than buying "gold" on eBay or something.

Anyway, so I got Draginol up to level 10 when I got tired of it.  I'm still not sure how I will feel about it long term. I played it so much during the beta/alpha that I'm not seeing a lot of new stuff.  If I can find more people I know on the Uther server that would make it more fun. Soloing gets old in a hurry even with two characters.

So if you're on Uther, look me up. If you're into these kinds of games, I think you'll like World of Warcraft. The lag issues seem to have subsided dramtaically and it's a very well put together game.

Yea, the lag issues were nasty during the beta as well. They released a press-release stating that they were working on it.. funny, the open beta had these same issues.. could'nt they have.. I know.. like, extended the beta period to fix those issues before release. There is still a lot of time left before christmas. Hope the euro version has this issue fixed before release - but with VU France I fear the hardware will be lacking.

MobMaster:
I dont see a problem with Mob Master myself, but there are some that will always go after any such innovation in games simply because they either do not have it, they are afraid of "competition" or they feel that they are somehow morally superior and should be able to dictate how others play the game.
Mob Master uses the same bandwidth and can only do the same as a normal player so I dont see any reason why you should not be allowed to use it.

Let me know when you release it.. I have the same problem myself. My friends usually outlevel me in 1 day and they play non-stop, example in EQ I was level 7 when they were past 20 [they were the first on the server to reach level 20], and we started on the same day... [Although they did exploit pathfinding and other bugs in the game to level as fast as possible]

If you find yourself tired with the game, perhaps you should try playing other races, class combinations? Or just run around exploring. I found the game world in WoW to be fantastic, and when I get it I cant wait to level up so I can go on PvP missions.

And if you *really* get bored with WoW, play EQ2 and you'll fall in love with WoW again pretty fast.

I'm really enjoying the game. It's my first MMORPG, so anything will probably impress me. I hit lvl 19 today (I've been playing quite a bit since Wednesday). My home is still near Ironforge, so if anyone sees me online and want to group, let me know. I can be there fairly quickly. I'm currently exploring the night elf area. The quests seemed easier there. Also, I'm looking to find a way to Stormwind. I have two quests that require me to talk to characters there, but I still can't figure out how to get there.
on Nov 28, 2004
Just got to lvl 12 last night.....and now in Auberdine....lets see now how this game opens up.....
on Nov 29, 2004
Its easy to get to Stormwind. Go to Ironforge into the gnome/eginerring section. There is a path thats leads to a tram that takes you right to Stormwind.
on Nov 29, 2004
The tram ride is fantastic, well, parts of it is anyway. I wont spoil any surprises.
Also make sure you take the Griphon rides. [And word of warning: do NOT take these griffin rides in EQ2 - they SUCK]

well....at the moment, I am in Darkshore.....but i am on an entirely different continent than Ironforge and Stormwind are on. Any tips on how to make it there? Especially as a level 13 Hunter.
on Nov 29, 2004
I am guessing that the Uther server is down? It is not on the server list....but i can't find anything on it anywhere....
on Nov 29, 2004
You get there by boarding a ship which is at the north west part of the continent.

1. Offer Mob Master as a special unsupported bonus for subscribing to Total Gaming.Net

2. ???

3. Profit.

I've played games, mainly MUDs that frowned on controlling 2 characters, but I've never seen a MMORPG yet that objected to extra subscription revenue. Incidently, are you using Cosmos UI?

...currently lvl 30 in the European beta, with about 2 months of testing to go before we get to pay.
on Dec 01, 2004
Yea, I would'nt mind mob master myself. Although I believe I have found a 'almost compatible' way to control two computers and two screens with little fuzz.
Use Win2VNC and VNC. You can then use one mouse and one keyboard and move it 'accross' screens as if you were using dual monitors, only, the second
screen is actually the second computer.

CosmosUI is almost a necessity to the game. If I rated WoW 95% it would be with CosmosUI, and 85% without. I seriously hope they do not do anything
in WoW to ruin it if some "purists" whine about others having two button rows [Which they also could get if they rtfm].

on Dec 01, 2004
what exactly does CosmosUI do? What is it?
on Dec 01, 2004
http://www.cosmosui.org/

WOW uses an XML compliant interface. Now I don't exactly know what that means except it allows them to skin the interface while also being able to make use of some logic statements. So with Cosmosui there are, eg, extra button rows (invaluable), timers on buffs, health and mana/rage/energy displayed in numbers, more detailed quest information, health bars that change colour as they go down, etc. I downloaded and installed it in about 2 minutes flat about a week ago and couldn't go back.
