We count from 1 upwards, therefore, the decade finishes at the end of 2010.

We count from 1 upwards, therefore, the decade finishes at the end of 2010.

Actually, by counting from 1 upward (the first day in year zero or in this case 2000), the decade finishes at the begining of 2010.

2000 - 2001 = year 1

2001 - 2002 = year 2

2002 - 2003 = year 3

2003 - 2004 = year 4

2004 - 2005 = year 5

2005 - 2006 = year 6

2006 - 2007 = year 7

2007 - 2008 = year 8

2008 - 2009 = year 9

2009 - 2010 = year 10

Interesting to see Apply and Microsoft fighting out all decade to have a few of their gadgets on this list. Funny though, I've always considered gadgets to be electronic or manual devices but never considered software to be a gadget, except maybe those in DesktopX but not really.

the decade finishes at the begining of 2010.

Or to be more accurate at the last second/minute/hour of December 31 2009 .... Spell checker

If Apple came out with the iDrive it would be on that list. USB flash drive should be in there.

That is only true if you assume that year 2000 was the 1st year of the decade. Because there was no 0 AD the first year was 1 AD so from 1/1/0001 to 12/31/0001 was the 1st year. That means that the 10th year did not end until 12/31/0010. Two thousand years later the decade will end on 12/31/2010. Further to claim there was a 0 AD it must also follow that there was a 0 BC. The calendar would have looked like ... -3, -2, -1, 0, 0, 1, 2, 3 ... which we all know is folly.

To embrace 12/31/2009 as the end of the 2010th year, then you must claim that year 2009 was the 2010th year which is really silly, though the French could have devised it so.

This whole argument started because people couldn't bear to wait for the end of 2000 to celebrate.

the decade finishes at the begining of 2010.

Technically speaking, the decade (10 full years) ends at 12.00am on Dec 31st 2010.

EG: if you count from the 1st day of 2000 until the last day of 2009, you have only 9 years... not a full decade.

However, if you count from when 1 full year into the new year has elapsed (which is correct) until 10 full years have elapsed, you arrive at the first second of 2011... the beginning of a new decade.

Back on topic....

If Apple came out with the iDrive it would be on that list. USB flash drive should be in there.

It's just like the bullshit detector... also absent from that list!!  The reason???  Apple never released it cos Jobsy didn't want people to know they didn't invent the dock; the OS; the GUI; the scroll mouse; personal computers, laptops and mobile phones.

I heartily agree! Since the time of tally marks, the human race has counted from 1; therefore, the first decade did not end until the end of Year 10. Now if it is a chance for a party, that is a different matter, but ignoring the fact does not invalidate the fact.

Top 10 gadgets that defined the AMERICAN decade though... Tivo, Motorola and palmone has little to no leverage in europe.
