Can a subscription drive save the site?
Published on December 5, 2003 By Draginol In OS Customization

Click to EnlargePaul got his Christmas Time Suite done. The frustrating thing is that WinCustomize is pokey due to the decrease in available hardware from the recent server crashes. This has affected JoeUser a bit too but not nearly to the level WC has been affected. So we've started a subscription drive to try to buy some new hardware. The goal is to get 500 people to buy premium WC subscriptions. It's a really good deal for all the stuff you get. But even if you didn't get that stuff, it's amazing how most people won't spend a dime helping contribute to something they take a lot from.

WinCustomize gets over 2 MILLION visitors per month. 500 new subscribers out of 2 million is such a tiny percentage and yet there is doubt we'll reach that goal. Which would be a shame because it would mean an end to WinCustomize as we know it today. For starters, non-subscribers would be put on a very tiny pipe.  Normally you can download skins and wallpapers and icons at 200K per sec if you have a cable modem.  That would all change though because WinCustomize IS going to get those new servers no matter what. The question is whether the users will pay for it in subscriptions or whether Stardock will foot the bill. If Stardock ends up having to pay for the servers, it's going to come out of the bandwidth budget.

I think it'll make it but I guess deep down somewhere, I really imagined that when the site says "Hey, we're hurting here, we lost 2 servers, we could really use your help" I pictured thousands of people stepping up to the plate.  In 2 days we've gotten about 50 people.  To put it in perspective, 70,000 unique visitors came to the site today. 24 of them today bought subscriptions. Which is much higher than normal. But many of those users are good people who actually subscribed twice.  So you have incredibly generous people helping out the site way beyond the call of duty and then the majority who could care less.

Sometimes I feel like I'm in the middle. We have people internally at Stardock who would love to see WinCustomize be purely a Stardock portal and eliminate any sections that are seen as being drains or competitive in nature.  But WinCustomize is also the place where most people get their Sysmetrix skins, Litestep themes, ICQ Plus skins, NeXTStart themes, and a whole host of other programs that few people would know about otherwise. I'd hate to see it become a purely Stardock site. But supporting the other sections is basically a form of corporate charity. And if we can't even manage to get 500 people to help the site out in its time of need then that'll really show that there's very little good will.

the drop in the bucket effect in all its glory...

Thanks. Yea, what's amazing is that the "community" of skinners is held together by such a tiny percentage of people.

2 million people supported by maybe 10,000 people (skinners, admins, subscribers, etc.). The ratio is shocking.

2 million people supported by maybe 10,000 people....... Shocking indeed! I really think you should be harder on the leeches Brad, considering that a large proportion of them aquire the software from nefarious sources. Take the limit down to 10 megs, I still think that's enough to evaluate both the site and the software. Just my opinion of course.

I didn’t even know Wincustomize was in such dire straits. I haven’t even registered my Windowsblind 4 even though I use it and like it. I am uncomfortable with the ordering procedure, it asks too much information and it reminds me of going to the DMV or something, if products such as Windowblind 4 were available on CD in a store, I would have bought it.

Is it secure to use a credit card in that online store? Why do I have to fill out so many required information fields? I would like to support Wincustomize; but it is undesirable to go through the ordering procedure to become an exalted non leech. You are right I take a lot of stuff from the site, mostly WMP skins made by the Skins Factory and windowblind skins from Duopixels, Mike Bryant, Treetog, Morphium, and some others but those are my favorites, oh yeah I like that thing Voodoo freak did with the Longhorn slate, that is pretty good.

The Stardock order store uses Verisign. It's pretty standard stuff. Very secure.

What really hurt WinCustomize was having TWO servers in one month go down. That's a lot to replace in a short amount of time.

I agree with Anthony R about the comfortability factor behind ordering online. I've been on the net for over eight years now and I've yet to make an online purchase.
It feels so..compromising. Especially when one prefers internet anonymousness (as much as possible). I admit there were times I've sat looking at the online purchase order, had all my information filled out..and then just closed the window without ever submitting it.
Maybe it's just my neuroses, but I can see I'm not alone.

Hey, if I only had a dime to my name, even though I already have a WC subscription.

Anthony: I've bought Windowblinds, CursorXP and the full-blow Object Desktop online through the Startdock store (I guess you can throw in the Wincustomize subscription too,) and I've had nary a problem. It was one of the nicest online purchases I've gone through so far.

This reminds me of the Looney Toones episode where Daffy could not get a reaction from the audience so he packed his belly full of explosives and detonated to thunderous applause, but he could only do it once.

Finally, someone agrees with me about something. The only time I make online purchases is when I am saving money tax wise on higher priced items, I don't generally make 20, or 50 dollar purchases online because it's not worth the potential hassle of getting my number lifted. Then you have to wonder about excessive required fields and the potential selling of personal information, just what I need a mailbox flooded with more crap, and a phone ringing off the hook with aggressive telemarketer’s.

I'm sorry Anthony but that sounds..well crazy.

People will happilly hand their credit card over to some cashier at the mall or restraunt but sweat a 128bit encrypted transaction server? I'm not aware of a single case of someone having their card "lifted" in all their years from using a Verisign protected store.

I see people complaining about not having a CC and thus not able to pay. I know that it is fairly easy to pay by money order. I did that myself. From a foreign country like mine that may take some time (4 to 6 weeks), but within the States (from which Stardock has half of its customers) it doesn't seem to be a problem and will probably take a couple of days.

I'll give you an example of the distrust here concerning paying by CC. When I saw the drive over at WC I thought it would be cool to buy several subscriptions. But because I don't have a CC (I am not a fan either) I tried to convince my sister to use her CC. Afterall, the drive would be over if I payed by money order. It wasn't until I said that the company was Stardock (she knows I do some for them) and that I knew the lady in charge (Kim). I needed Kim because none of the subscriptions (1 WC, 1 ODNT of $50 and 1 ODNT of $35) were intended for other people. She told me twice that if she got into trouble because of it that she knew were to find me.

So, logic (knowing that CCs are secure using a Verisign) doesn't help very much. People here don't trust computer systems. In this case my sister trusted Kim because I knew her.

Hehe. "... were intended for other people." should read "... were intended for me."
