The joys of running a website

The skin library file server over at WinCustomize took a hit today when the primary library hard drive died. Luckily, we do regular backups so it's not a total loss but very likely will lose a few files in the process. How many remains to be seen.

Most of our stuff uses RAID in redundancy mode but unfortunately, because of the sheer size of the library, it's not really practical (on a budget) to do that. But boy I wish we had that set up tonight. I guess it's better tonight than say Thursday. What a pain in the rear.

Good thing we don't run all the Stardock.net servers off one machine or we'd be really hosed (JoeUser isn't affected other than blogs that link to images on that machine).

Ah! So that's what happened...

Well, my roommate's office -does- have some IBM 7133 disk systems that are just sitting in their shipping boxes that we're trying to convince them to let us give a new home to... Each one already nicely populated with drives...

(We won't go into how -poorly- ran this company is...)

Wow, a HD crash is pretty major. I hope not to much is lost. How often are the backups made? It's to bad RAID wasn't in use. It would be such a simple fix if it was. Oh well... I guess you just have to live with what you got, right?
