Uglier isn't faster
Published on January 21, 2005 By Draginol In GalCiv Journals

So this next week I'm off to visit the game magazines.  It's almost the same time of year that I went to show off Galactic Civilizations I.  We didn't get much preview coverage. Maybe..just maybe it's because the graphics were awful and looked like shareware from the 80s?  Look at this first screenshot.  This is where Galactic Civilizations I was at that point.  Look at the top left, you'll see the frame rate.  36 frames per second.  Which was certainly fast "enough". It's funny though because people always assume that if the graphics are bad, the hardware requirements must be low.  But that's not necessarily the case.  The graphics improved greatly between the GalCiv Alpha and the final game just as the graphics will improve from the GalCiv 2 alpha to the final game.

Now fast forward 3 years and here's what we're taking on the media tour (similar view).  Look at the frame rate in the top left. 166 frames per second. Same hardware as the above screenshot was taken. That's the benefit of 3D acceleration.  So ironically, Galactic Civilizations II, with much better graphics, may have lower hardware requirements than the first one. I suspect for most players, GalCiv 2 will run a lot smoother and faster than the first one.

The graphics are still pretty rough. But comparing to where we were in relation to the first one, we're doing pretty well I think.

playing around with the lighting a lot. So from build to build (even during this week) the way ships look and are lit and such will change.

great feeling of depth that we have with GC's background in 3D doesn't seem to be easy either. Hope this "parallax scrolling" will do the trick.

ments than the first one.

I would be very happy when it runs on my Athlon 500 with Matrox G400 and 192MB.

I'm confident that I will have the budget to buy GC2 but unfortunately I don't have it for a new PC.

One question - will it pause while tabbed out? This caused me to stop playing (that I couldn't tab out and have the game running in the background). I'd take it as an option....

That first image brings back so many fond memories!

Good luck with the magazine previews this week and hopefully you'll get some good (and well deserved) media attention,

Paul.

If your video drivers do not support DirectX 9.0c, you will not be able to run GC2 because, among other things, you will not have any fonts. However, even if you upgraded your video card, you may still have problems because your hardware is so low end.

I can add your suggestion to our list of feature requests, since I can see how that might be useful on a gigantic galaxy in the late game. It wouldn't be a simple feature, since we'd have to make a lot of events able to be queued until the game window got focus again, like ship battles. It might not be that hard to implement, but it's not so trivial that I can say that we'll definitely put it in.

Ship battles are interactive? Woot. (shows how much I've been paying attention).

Thanks for responding, though

Oh Great One, it is the fallen one, Aeryck.
Unknown to you I have been bad, really bad.
But I promise from this moment to be good, as good as I can.
Truly sorry to you Oh Megabyte for dissing you and your colleagues.
I have apologized to Hexadecimal, and I hope that ye all will eventually forgive me for my moment of Hitler type madness.

I love all joeusers, and will try to stay in my corner of the Religious-fire breathing hot headed and sometimes delusional ones.

Brad, love the graphics, I'm going to pester my son into renewing his stardock account so that I can get GC2 when y'all release it. ::two thumbs up::
