Fasting is a lot harder than I thought
Published on February 18, 2004 By Draginol In Diet
My wife and I are on a diet. I'm trying to lose about 10 pounds this year. The diet we're following calls for it to start with 3 days of cleansing the system of starches and sugars. It's not so much fasting as it is trying to get us over our addiction to starches and sugars.

And holy cow am I an addict. I never realized how much in starches and sugars I consume each day. I would start out the day with French toast. Then grab a glazed donut or two on the way to work. For lunch, Penara Bread. And then for dinner something fairly typical like chicken or beef or whatever. I also drink 1 to 2 cans of coca cola each day. Before bed I'd have some toast or a piece of sour dough bread.

Now, for the cleansing period, I can drink water, eat as much chicken or other lean meat as I'd like. Just no sugars or starches. That means no bread, no donuts, no chocolate, no coke.

I wasn't hungry per se, because I coudl eat as much meat as I wanted to. But my craving for donuts and bread were painful. I never realized that starches and sugars could be an addiction.

Three days without chocolate... is that possible?

crack baby! I've tried low carbing it once. Made me too light headed. Of course, i really don't care for meat much (once in awhile) so that wouldn't work out well for me.

Of course, simple carbs are different than complex one. The ones that really get you are the ones in coke, candy, white bread, etc. The complex ones, like in whole grains are a bit different. Just cutting back on the sugary stuff should help.

After you 3 cleaning days, if you go in the habit on not eating sweet at breakfast, you will find ou that your hunger will be substantially diminished for the day.

You right sweets are addictive!

I agree 100%. I generally eat a variety of foods, but the ones that I love are the ones that are bad for you. I love coffee with cream and sugar... what a way to start the day, but no, it's not all that great according to the diet industry. I hate whole wheat bread, give me Wonder Bread, and I'm a happy girl. I can stick to a a healthy diet, but my stomach desires sugary, sweet, and fatty things... arrrgh.

It sucks being a slave to body chemistry. Not to mention caffiene right?

If you are drinking 2 cans of coke a day x 200 working days x 120 calories / 3500 calories per pound you should lose ~13lbs in one year.

good luck. In this... we are 100% in agreement

Jeez Brad, don't you eat any fruits and vegetables? That's a lot of bread products you've been eating.

I wish both of you total success. 'Seems like I've tried it a million times and could never stick to it.

Vic, what the heck are vegetables? Do the grow those things anymore??

Oops, didn't mean to cut that off then.
Anyway, Brad, it's I funny thing the way that is. Has the phenomena occured that "just so happens" the day you started, a friend bakes you brownies, and your other friend made way too much of that incredible bread pudding and is trying so hard to give it away, and everybody seems to be feeling unusually generous to you with food?

oh yeah. Gotta love that bread pudding man. Good luck with that

The first week of a low carb diet is very hard. But after that it is easy if you don't cheat. I found that salads were a treat after all of that protein. I also drink Italian water with gas and that tastes really good, too. You'll lose your weight fast, the trick will be to keep it off.

Lose fast, gain faster. Lose slowly and steadily..keep it off. ;o)

Uh.... are you saying that you once smoked crack?

Yes, Brad is a crack monkey.  I have seen him eat pop rocks and drink a coke at the same time.  Sugar..crack..same thing....

And when I say something tastes like crap, I mean that literally. I am comparing the taste of something to various bowel movements I have sampled over the years..
on Feb 19, 2004
Brad, does that mean that you can actually compare it to...say.... Chihuahua crap, or is that too specific? Man...that's talent. LOL
