Brad Wardell's views about technology, politics, religion, world affairs, and all sorts of politically incorrect topics.

At CES there are companies from all around the world. And the respect people have for intellectual property seems to depend on the culture.

There's nothing quite like walking the show floor only to see your stuff on some computer's screen without permission.

The above photo doesn't really show it well but Chinese Computer Manufacturer "Lime Computer" was showing their full screen weather application on their PCs. It's cool but it's using Stardock's copyrighted weather images.

These images come from here: https://www.stardock.com/weather. It's a collection of weather icons that are very high quality. And they have a very generous license use. If you have a free program or website, you can use them provided that you display Stardock's copyrighted notice somewhere. For commercial use, a paid license is required typically.

Do you plan on taking any action against the company?
on Jan 07, 2008
I'll be talking to legal about it.

Wow, that's some catch.

Lets review, a computer electronics show held in the US, Stardock is a company in the US that writes and publishes computer customizing software. I bet they didn't think Stardock would send anyone to Las Vegas, let alone the man in charge.

Too funny   \ Not really.

This is why you should have taken me. I could have done a great swan dive right into the monitor and sent it across the floor in a million pieces. Looked at them and said 'Oops.' and if they got nasty about it...told them my name was Jack Nolan.

Since it's a Chinese company, it's doubtful that it would do any good. I would be talking to them about acquiring a license for them though.

Whatever you do- don't touch the PC.  Wouldn't want you to get lead poisoning from the plastic...
