Democrats need to work on their presentation. When I've heard Democrats say that they'll move to Canada and that the majority of Americans are idiots, or that Bush is like Hitler, or that the South consists of country bumpkins who don't know a damn thing, it sounds as though they're being serious. They should clarify that officially.

If I lived on Lake Woe-be-Gone and had to eat powdermilk biscuits, I'd be raising hell too!

but the question arises.....what if a bill was introduced (and, if congress was primarily a democratic congress)....would it be a joke then? or would you so subtly slide on the side to get rid of Christians' vote? So far, quite a bit of the liberals that are here, already want to toss out everything that Christians believe.....all the way down to why they voted the way they voted (Moral Issues)

I love how some Democrats have committed suicide, now that is either a sick sense of humor (in a normal person's mind, my sense of humor in my mind) or it is not a joke.
Either openly state your intention to be funny or don't try to be funny.

Now, I just need to figure out how I can tie in a man on fire, a plinko machine, Ann Coulter, Garrison Keillor, Muppets, and Hot wax into a joke and I will be set for a Stand-up Comedy routine.

As someone who heard this on the show, taken in its entirety it was quite obvious it was a joke. It also came across as a bit of a whiny, bitter joke, but I had no doubt it was a joke (remember this is coming from a conservative Christian).

I thought it was kind of clever - not exactly funny, but it brought a smile to my face just because of the sheer ridiculousness of the idea. It kind of mimics the old "Don't let atheists into positions of authority because they don't believe in an afterlife" argument. Thanks for posting the joke Draginol!

I am a democrat. I condemn Keilor as a total outcast of the democratic party unreservedly.

It was a joke. We all get that.

That doesn't make it acceptable.  Replace "Born Again Christians" with the word "Jews" or "Muslims".  Still "funny"?

But neither Jews nor Muslims believe that their actions on Earth are largely irrelevent, so the joke doesn't fit as well. So no, not funny and ignores the historical subtext of the whole idea.

hard-core dominionists make no secret of their determination to annex the usa to the kingdom of heaven...literally.  their muslim counterparts in the islamic republic of iran and usama's undisclosed location make no secret of their determination to do the same thing on an international scale.  fundamentalist jews aren's secretive about their plan to reestablish the biblical israel ruled by jehovah.  

i'm not amused either. 

i recognize a difference between 'dominionists' and 'born-again christians' or 'christians' of any type who aren't planning to use their affiliation and clout as leverage to usurp the constitution.  it's past time for the latter to make it clear they don't support dominionism--just as its past time for moderates of all stripes to repudiate the fanatics who claim to represent them. 

Another blogger here, who I would have never have expected it from, said on one of my blogs:

The Constitution of the United States for instance, the laws of the Congress and the Laws of the States, and of course, the Supreme Court of the United States."

I can't decide if this is sublimated hate that is now slipping out because they just can't hide it after Kerry's loss, or just ineptitude at trying to validate their tired belief that their values are universal in the face of evidence that more than 50% of the nation disagrees with them.

I mean, my God, look at Kingbee's post #15. Have you ever seen such wacko conspiracy stuff? I'm sure Keillor was joking, because he has expressed his appreciation for the "sturdy" values of these folks in his home state countless times that I have heard in his radio broadcasts. Others, though, are creeping me out. These are the people that wouldn't tolerate the SUGGESTION of repressing a Muslim because of the "dangers" to our nation, and yet now when they think THEIR values might be challenged, in a totally acceptable way according to the process of Democracy... well, I don't want to consider what they are thinking.

Let's just have faith in the hope this is a group of know-it-alls that are suddenly going cold-turkey from their idea of pre-eminence and handling it poorly.

Draginol, If Keillor said this, then it was wrong and misguided whether it was a joke or not but I don't think it represents the thinking of a majority of Democrats. You were right to say "That doesn't make it acceptable. Replace "Born Again Christians" with the word "Jews" or "Muslims". Still "funny"?" No. None of it is funny. However, I have not seen Keillor's comments reiterated as the new Democratic Party mantra anywhere. There will always be extremists, misguided thinking, and people who make tasteless jokes in any group, including the Republican party and in other groups, but I don't think Keillor's remarks are an accurate reflection of the left or of Democrats in general as your title suggests.
