Brad Wardell's views about technology, politics, religion, world affairs, and all sorts of politically incorrect topics.

While the vast majority of users who actually have Beta 1Z voted for moving forward (the publicly displayed poll isn’t designed to filter based on downloads but rather whether they have an Impulse account) we believe another Beta 1 is still in order.

There are some Windows XP issues we want to nail down in particular with regards to stability and memory and there were a bunch of fixes that got finished that didn’t get checked in in time for beta 1Z3.

We are probably going to dispense with the polling unless I can get IT to spend time to filter out users who don’t actually have the beta (incidentally, the votes include the user ID and the IP address for the guy who put in 11 no votes with the same IP with different accounts, tsk tsk).

The forum discussions alone were enough to convince me that one additional beta 1 build made sense.

It IS important, however, that anyone who experiences problems report them. Don’t assume that we know about them. Read this post.

I had no idea about that poll, either.  Could we humbly request to get a notice about an important poll like this in the Developers' Journal?

After Z4, I imagine things should be pretty stable.  How exciting!

I second this.  I was mainly browsing the regular forums looking for mention of a poll without realizing that it was in the journals section.

I missed the poll as well.   But while I haven't run into any CTD's I don't mind another beta 1z to fix the problems for others before we go into Beta 2.

on Apr 26, 2010

Thanks for giving us another one. The extra week of performance tweaks should hopefully make a big difference.

on Apr 26, 2010

I saw the poll and voted no since I still CTD and freeze a bit to much. I like how Brad isn't going to give us old school XP users the short end of the stick. At any rate in retrospect you should always have N+1 Betas and this is Elemental's +1.

I missed the Poll as well. Also assumed where it might be Posted. (doh!)

I did mentioned casually in a thread that I would move on, but that was after Brad's thought here. https://forums.elementalgame.com/380890  #15

But hey, I welcome another Z as I too have seen improvement from 1Z2 to 1Z3 but still crash and Mem out given enough time.

So bring it on.

I also missed the pole and had no idea that poles were even being displayed there.

I must admit I found the poll only by stumbling upon it. Nonetheless I am grateful that the stardock team are focusing upon XP issue's although I must admit this has been something of a call to upgrade to windows 7 (apologies to Mark Shuttleworth)

XP 64 is an unsupported OS, for both Elemental and Impulse.

Last message I saw from Stardock was an active plan for providing a 64Bit version of Elemental.  There was a financial cost from Intel which generated a strong belief no 64Bit version would be made available, yet last I saw Stardock found a method around the extreme financial barrier.

I really can't figure out why people run that on a gaming machine, it was only intended for use by driver developers and in high end computing situations that needed the extra RAM capacity in a client OS before Vista came out. Microsoft doesn't even really support it anymore now that there won't be new service packs for Windows Server 2003 (which is the same code that XP 64 is based on).

Vista has the same RAM limitation as XP unless its the 64Bit version.

Very very very large maps such as those which can be made with CIV_4 need the high end computing situations using the extra RAM capacity.  It's the same reason why Stardock is interested with providing support for a 64Bit version because the map sizes won't be limited as with the 32Bit version.

So now you know why some people run that on a gaming machine.

And another 'I missed the poll' post... But glad to hear we'll get another 1Z patch before Beta 2 starts.

on Apr 26, 2010

It is in order since I keep getting a white screen at anti-aliasing x4 and x8, x2 will cause a crash to desktop quite often.

To recall this is what it looks like:

And to try to help thing along here is a DxDiag file if it helps:

With the 64bits version of the licensed engine Havok. If Havok 64bits  isn't supported for Windows XP 64 but only for Vista 64 bits and 7 64 bits, there are few things than Stardock will be able to do.

XP-64 is unsupported. Emphasizing the important part. Vista 64 and Win7 64 will be supported once the 64 bit version is out. XP 64 is not and will not.

(Aha, found the proof.)

Once again, XP 64. These reasons apply to consumer versions of Windows, like Vista 64 and Win 7 64. XP 64 was an extremely limited release intended for very specific professional usage scenarios, and for driver writers to have something to start working with before Vista. It was never pushed or intended for home use, and support was largely discontinued pretty quickly (officially it was along with normal XP, but normal XP was really better about being supported).

For various reasons, some people wound up with XP 64 on gaming machines, but that's a usage situation that is pretty oddball and not guaranteed to work.

on Apr 26, 2010

Well to be precise, Vista and Win7 are supported in both 32-bit and 64-bit no matter what.  The difference is that we are working on a native 64-bit version as well but the 32-bit version will also work.

XP 64-bit isn't supported but I imagine the 32-bit version will work.

on Apr 26, 2010

Yay, updates. Looking forward to testing Elemental's 1Z4 build on this 32-bit windows xp machine

That's good to know... gives me a reason to triple boot my home gaming system with the Win_7 64Bit version.

The Win 7 64Bit version was not around when I was building my home system and the Vista_64Bit version not only has problems with some of the older games, but would have taken more time tweaking thus I selected to install the XP64Bit version.  While the XP64Bit version was never intended for gaming it works perfectly for all my RTS, TBS and RPG games.  The 'extremely limited release' must be a city retailers reference because it's quite easy to find and purchase a legit copy online.  Luckily due to my career I never need to purchase the operating systems.

Excellent news... I'll setup my home system to triple boot with Win_7 64Bit version to assist with the beta testing of very very large maps.  I love how Elemental will have maps which will truly be large enough to be a world... playing a single game for weeks before encountering your first  AI  opponent.... the armies, magic, and terrain will provide a very intense experience.
