imageThere is quite a bit of concern (mostly from marketing) that people will be angry when beta 2 comes out because of how much we crippled the betas.

I hope those of you in the beta understand why we did what we did with the betas. Elemental is a new game. It’s been many years since there’s been a new fantasy strategy game made from scratch. As a result, it was important to us that we not rely on 3D graphics or multiplayer in order for the game to have good game mechanics.

Now, some of you may be like me where you’ve played games for decades so you’ll understand where I’m coming from.  A GOOD game shouldn’t need super good graphics or high end production values. Tower Defense is an awesome game and it has virtually no graphics.  So for Beta 1, we went to considerable efforts to force it to be, well, suck in order to get the beta testers to think about the game AS A GAME rather than as some sort of multimedia experience.

Now, when Beta 2 shows up, obviously with the 3D engine, some of you may feel we were trying to torture you or something. We just wanted to make sure that you guys felt truly free to debate and suggest different game ideas.

When this is all done, we will have to revisit just how much of an impact you guys have had in making the game a BETTER game and how much of that was because of being able to play minus fancy graphics.

Nowadays, it’s very very rare for brand new major PC games to be made. Nearly everything is a sequel or a remake. We felt it important that we take our time and do this right.  So while 7 months in beta 1 might have seemed excessive, I think it’ll become clear that giving the beta testers time to debate game mechanics and concepts was worth it.

Off topic a bit:

As much as I agree with Frogboy about the hardware, I can't help but wonder what the game could be with a community like XBL.  The Xbox hardware is inferior but having 10+ million people fire up a single breathing community on a daily basis is just amazing.  The fragmentation of the PC userbase has always been and will continue to be an issue.

As is the issue of a vast majority of XBL users being idiots/immature/not being strategy-game players/consoles being bad for strategy games. See where I'm going with this?

Despite the above opinion of the XBL community as a group. (not going into that rather dark cave)

A true Community does not require 10 Million people. It only requires a very solid base of very dedicated players.

Not that 10 Million unit Sold would not be good here mind you. LOL

Elemental could literally not be made for a console without drastically changing its design.

The fact is, there is just too much stuff to fit into the limitations of a console.  The reason why games are "dumbed down" for consoles is because consoles are weak. They're basically 5 year old PCs with decent video cards.

I'm interested in making a strategy game that has a lot of depth to it and demonstrates what a game that has been made exclusively for the PC with an engine exclusively designed for the PC can do in 2010.  It's not about eye candy. It's about making a better game.

A truly great focus even as you allow your community to 'influence' the game. That is also why Elemental is at the top of my games list!

I think that the following "statement" is true about most of the console players: eye candy > everything else for them.

Besides, it would be pointless to make a decent strategy game for the consoles. People are buying consoles to play some FPS/Action/Sport games for example.

Very good point you need a full keyboard to play strategy games the right way, no need for joysticks when one has a PC with options not (use 20 fingers to press the same button is 5 different sequences in order to get one action executed. Thank you Frogboy for wanting to develop a game that did not follow popular consensuses of following the "cash cows". Anyway you never know when the Laptop computer will become the new console for gamers. I have seen some (expensive but) nice laptops with some nice video cards built in them ( with no need to overclock).

That's a lot of generalizations.

I actually rather enjoyed my time with Beta 1, though unfortunately life was busy enough that I couldn't provide what I felt to be a sufficient effort into testing and feedback. I hate feeling that I've let Stardock and the community down in my own little way, but clearly there have been quite a number of dedicated testers!

Even if Elemental never got a fancy full 3d graphics engine, the gameplay is solid enough that I would enjoy the game anyway. Heck, I may end up spending a big part of my time with the final game playing in cloth map mode anyway. I really love what we have so far, and knowing that there's so much more yet to be seen of this game only has me excited!

You know better than me but I find it strange that clothmap elemental would not fit in PS3's 256MB memory + 256MB video memory.

How much memory does current beta, which has 3D dissabled, use?

Anyone trying to discover this with the task manager, please don't forget to add to it the memory used by a lightweight version of Windows capable of running Elemental War of Magic.

Non-dumbed down games were made for my old MSX which had 32 kilobytes of memory. Certainly the reason for the dumbing down of some/many console games is not technical limitations.
