As I mentioned last month, I started monitoring our energy usage very closely.

It turned out we had two key areas that were running away with power.  The first was keeping the pool room warm. That was costing us a fortune. And by warm I mean like 80 degrees (it’s supposed to be about the same temp as the water).  The other was the recirculating hot water which was using a lot of gas.

Using this knowledge and making lots of other adjustments, I cut our energy bill by 45% this past month! W00t.

I live in Kansas, I think our big thing here is wind energy, I guess we have a shit ton of wind around these parts.  Now, I just need to find a way to convert my car to wind power...

Or microwave power plants like in Sim City so I can 'accidentally' point the beam at someone.

YES!

Miss those. I think they went away by simcity 3000.

of course, all they are is giant epic solar power arrays in space... what you built in sc2k was just the receiver.

"I like those ideas. With proper solar panels you could maybe generate enough power to be self sufficient and even 'sell' some back to the power consortium."

The sytems we have in Oz do just that.

Even the planning act re heritage overlays is being amended so 'appearance' issues that arise where people will be 'defacing' the streetscape because the only roof orientation to North is on their frontage will be allowed.

'quaint' Victorian Architecture with ugly solar panels on the roof.... makes a mockery of 'heritage'....

An enterprising Archie might just figure a way to disguise them... could make a bloody fortune doing it, too...

Might be one for the materials engineers in the longer run. Photovoltaic paint and that sort of thing.

Must be nice to live somewhere with an architectural tradition to preserve (or mourn passing). I'm Floridian. Even though we have neat things like a few cracker houses still around from the old days and some half-decent modernism from the Sarasota School, it's mostly McUgly sprawl and 'town centers' that fell off a few trucks.

Isn't that the truth!   However, you know what we DON'T have right now....houses buried in snow. (I'm originally from Wisconsin).

on Feb 03, 2011

I'm currently North of Wisconsin ... we tried to send the snow down to you guys the other day ... we almost got you too!!! Sneaky rascals you are.

on Feb 03, 2011

Now there's an idea...photo-voltaic paint....zinc-alume colour .... or at worst red-oxide ... or both.

One hurdle.... zinc galvanizing mixed with lead exhaust emissions [not to mention lead flashing] .... add a bit of water...and you have a battery...er....serious corrosion problems....

Capitalism is powerful because the government can create economic incentives to make the populace do just about anything.
You're thinking of socialism.

While most of us do not have indoor pools, the article did bring out some crazy comments that were worth the read!

Congrats on the energy usage, and enjoy the pool!  I understand you guys are freezing out side!  We are just COLD.

Bought a house 5 yrs ago. Without anyone living in it. Just enuf heat to prevent the pipes from bursting, the gas bill was $800.00 to $900.00  A MONTH. When I contacted the gas folks, they could care less and just pay your bill was the attitude.  Alrighty then. It was so outa there. They

didn't want to remove gas hook up meter to the house. And charged me like $40.00.  I now have electric heat.  And because the outside to the house was redone last summer,

I'm proud to say our energy bill was $189.89 this month.
