Even as an option?

First, what is a mega event? A mega event is a randomly generated event that dramatically alters the game play.

What are some examples of mega-events?

  1. Allied War. Three of the 9 players who are already friendly decide to ally together and declare war on everyone else.
  2. Plague. A space plague that will gradually wipe everyone out unless a particular research item is found.
  3. Culture Shock. A particular alien civilization gets their influence boosted by 10X and players have to decide how to combat it.
  4. Ultimate Doom. A particular civilization is getting their abilities increased by 1% each week (turn). Eventually they'd be gods. What is to be done?
  5. A horde of space pirates begin wiping out the defenses of each race.

You get the idea.  The mega events are UNbalancing. They would disurpt strategies. And they would be optional.

The question is, do people want this stuff enough to justify the effort involved in creating them. And what sorts of events would people want?

I'd like to see these events, so long as I can turn them off. They sound cool and deserving of their own event video's though.

1. Possible crime syndicate providing a addictive substance that begins affecting all civ's economies (requires research and police style facilities set up on most planets with a treaty needing to be signed by all civ's to eliminate them) maybe finding some remote system that is concealed requiring a fleet action and ground force to eliminate (might even be one of your own worlds that appears to be doing what you ask but in fact is a front for the crime lords)

2. Some sort of galactic style event (back drop mystery) that opens hidden research branches that you would not normally have access too (only if you get this event) requiring you to build special buildings on precursor artifact sites (i.e. those 700%bonus tiles) to prevent the event or open up access to a hidden world/pocket space with some cool bonus worlds...or freeing something not nice ... randomized

3. An event that you must devote resources to stop i.e. smear campaign that lowers your diplomatic percentage against other civ's (possibly sponsored by a faction from within that you must discover before too late, you are at war)

4. A peace movement that starts to prevent wars and begins lowering your percentage for mil production and economy that has to be stopped by your police forces(or maybe you can fund if they are affecting other civ's at the same time you are crushing them on the homefront)

Great idea, to force us to deal with the totally unexpected. How about an event opening up an alternative universe to explore, but with additional risks introduced as well?

please none that spawn huge amounts of miniature ships everywhere

Argh! I might want to revoke my statement from above!

I saw the corporate assassination with the minature ships last night for the first time.... oh snap.. that was crazy (my PC didn't seem to mind all those ships). That was/is fun.. I am still dealing with it. Funny thing is, my Ally the drengin got the event where they are slowly becoming very powerful... so the two of us are seriously tearing the galaxy apart between the two of us. This 1.3 (not patched yet) is so much fun. I love it.

How about a super powerful invasion fleet of either good or evil beings. They have only a certain number of uber ships ... BUT ... the least powerful good or evil race ally with them, riding on their coat tails to achieve galactic power once again.

Yeah, this would be awesome! I like the idea!

spot on this should go in at some point
on Sep 13, 2006
YES! This is a fantastic idea. And if you can simply turn this off, even the people who don't like this have no reason to complain. Why would you NOT put this is?!

I think the game should only have these events happen in a biased manner, for example, if a player/computer is looseing then they get a good bonus but if they are winning by a large margin then they get a negitive event. This would put a hole new slant on general games and would make it harder to win a game thus a possable addition to the metaverse scoreing system.

But you guys know best.

Yes, a new checkbox for 'Enable MegaEvents' would be a nice addition.

Sounds great! I'm all for (optional) super-crazy events!

Oh, a thousand times yes. Mega-events would add so much flavour, and make sure games would never play out the same. What would be important is for the player never to be completely at the mercy of such a random element e.g. a space plague should always have something that could be researched to combat it, even if this required a huge science commitment. I would also focus on events that play around with player relationships, either forming alliances or creating enemies, as this could really shake things up. And of course, the idea of a mega-event seems absolutely tailor made for the Dreadlords (finally) showing up.

Antother BIG YES, from me. As long as they're optional, I'm all for it. Great ideias from the users here too.

I wouldn't mind seeing mega-events, but I admit there's one I'd be particularly interested in: The Dreadlords suddenly showing up!

Whether they simply start with a "swarm" of ships and invade straight away, or whether they first colonize a previously-uninhabitable system and then go on the rampage, I don't care. But I'd really love to see a Dreadlord invasion in my regular sandbox games.

I really like the uninhabitable system part. It would tie in nicely with the dormant race reawakening (the Shadows, Za'Ha'Dum, Babylon 5)image. If they had to build up from a smallish start players would get a long shot at taking them down quickly before they could fully re-establish themselves. That might help if the event were to kick in early game.

I'm going to say NO.

Against most by what I read. The reason is that I'd always have the options set to OFF when playing Metaverse. These would ruin the game, especially if they happened early on.

Whatever strategy you'd been working on would go Poof.

Stardock works very hard on this game and the resources could be placed elsewhere, I imagine most everyone would set the switch to off when they cared about the outcome.

What if the mega events boosted your end game score? If an event took place your score is increased by X amount in recognition for the extra challenge.

Personally I'd have it on all the time, whatever happens in my games happens, if I'm forced to sitch track then its a test of how well I can hack it. The outcome is always important, thats why I play games through to the end if I can, win or lose. I get the score I get.

Another possibility though, is it a possibility to have the mega events present in the game from the start, but dormant? If Weber II is colonised the plague is unleashed. Regulus IV? Whoops you just ran into the Dread Lords. Isangi I? Pirate base. In theory if you/AI encounter the events while exploring you get a little advance notice of the threat nd cn incorporate it into your plans. It becomes an additional randomising factor in galaxy creation I suppose. Dunno if it would help or defeat the point somewhat...
