Eternal September refers to when the Internet became open to everyone to participate on (1993). Our communications capability has grown at an amazing rate since then. I marvel daily at all the things that are possible, just 20 years later, thanks to the Internet. At the same time, I cringe at the ugliness that the Internet has created in humans that was not previously possible. There was a study, the link escapes me, that shows that the Internet allows like minded people to essentially isol...

So far is to run it via Parallels on the Mac.  In that setup, on a MacBook Pro with the way MacOS X Mountain Lion handles full screen it actually almost works.  Now if there was only  a way to make the charms bar less obnoxious.

Headline: Obama has a 3 point lead over Romney in the latest ABC/Washington post poll. As a stat nut, I like to look at the internals.  So here they are: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/polls/postabcpoll_20121013.html Lots of interesting stuff in there. Especially when you get to the bottom: Wait a second.  So they changed their sample size since the September (pre debate) poll to give Democrats a +9 point advantage in likely voters versus a 3 point a...

This week, the hard hitting reporters from Gawker bring you: “The CEO Who Built Himself America’s Largest House Just Threatened to Fire His Employees if Obama’s Elected” [actual headline] http://gawker.com/5950189/the-ceo-who-built-himself-americas-largest-house-just-threatened-to-fire-his-employees-if-obamas-elected This bad BAD man also has a LARGE house. What a monster. [editor’s note: Sure, we could have simply stated that this man sent an email to his employees explai...

Caused a minor outrage on Qt3 a couple years ago by being uncomfortable with individual leaders having their own logo. I stupidly pointed out that personalized logos have commonly been used by totalitarian movements in the past (Godwin alert!) But you know, it’s still creepy. And you know what else is creepy? To politicians: STOP IT.

Multiplicity 2 was released today. You can get it here: https://www.stardock.com/products/multiplicity/ Here’s a video of it in action: What makes Multiplicity special isn’t that it’s the first program ever that can enable users to use multiple computers at once. You can get a digital switch to do that and heck, there’s freeware out there that will let you use a keyboard and mouse to move back and forth between computers. Instead, what makes Multipl...

Jury is out on the new maps.  The satellite images are newer than what is on Bing or Google though. Siri is noticeably better than it was previously. I was able to ask “Where’s a good Pizza place around here?” and it got me a list.  I asked it “Are there any new Bruce Willis movies out?” to which it found the Expendables and The Cold Light of Day and where they’re showing. I haven’t noticed anything else.  I saw Passbook (the new app) but can’t tell you if it does anythi...

Anyone who has an SSD already know this. But there are still people out there who aren’t sure on this.  The performance difference of putting in an SSD is greater than any single upgrade I’ve ever seen since the days back in the early 90s of going from 4M to 8M in memory on Windows NT or OS/2.

October is going to be insanely good. I have a ThinkPad X1 Carbon on order for my wife. A new Kindle white on order for me. And of course the iPhone 5 will be generally available. It does appear technological progress and innovation is accelerating.

Over at MacRumors they have an article reporting on benchmarking results from PrimateLabs.  The iPhone 5 comes in with a total score of 1601.  The iPad 3, by contract, is 766.  Mine’s on order.

Some of you may recall that I was going on an extended sabbatical after War of Magic shipped. I still remain active online but as I detailed on Freakonomics , the long hours over many years had taken their toll and I was going to diversify what I spent my days doing.  What started out as a sabbatical after War of Magic evolved for the reasons I outlined on the podcast into a semi-retirement. My libertarian friends have called it "Going Galt". But that's really not an accurate w...

We’re getting some beautiful weather here in Michigan this Summer. This morning I took the dog and went around taking some pictures from around “the yard”.   My dog sitting in the Ranger EV.  I intend to write up some impressions of this vehicle. We absolutely love it. It’s silent which lets us putter around the woods looking at wildlife but still a great utility vehicle for moving things around.  This picture was taken in the orchard.   ...

So the iPhone 5 is out and naturally the fans and detractors have lined up. For me, the iPhone 5 is a no-brainer upgrade. LTE.  I have LTE on my iPad and it makes a huge difference when I'm traveling.  If the only thing the iPhone 5 had was LTE, I'd still upgrade from my 4S to it. Of course, that's not the only thing in the iPhone 5 delivers. Here are a few of the things I care about to varying degrees: It's about 20% lighter than the 4S.  I kind of c...
