tagline for the expansion
Published on May 29, 2006 By Draginol In GalCiv Journals

One of the nice things about being an indie title that isn't incredibly mainstream is that you can do things that wouldn't necessarily appeal to the casual player.

For instance, the expansion pack for GalCiv II has gotten its features, story, plot, etc. mapped out now.  We'll talk about that more soon.

But it will contain a campaign and it will be dark. Very dark.  Two of the major civilizations in GalCiv II will be wiped out. Eliminated. You'll still be able to play them in GalCiv II but come GalCiv III, they won't exist. Eradicated.  Individuals of the two races may still exist and show up in GalCiv III but as playable races, their histories will come to an end.

Two new civilizations will be introduced in the expansion pack which will have the native ability to make use of planets that the others can't use without research (the expansion will introduce the concept of special planet types that can't be colonized until you've researched the appropriate environment technology). A third civilization will be added too which  will act as the main villain (well, of course the Drengin are villains too but, well you'll see).

And if you think the blood thirsty Drengin are bad with their desire to enslave all the galaxy as "slavelings", there are worse things than the Drengin and we're not talking about the Dread Lords.

I reckon the Korx and the Altarians...

The Korx are a hopeless race.. they have no flavour at all in addition to looking stupid.. i mean a race of ultimate mecenaries!?!? seriously.

I think the Altarians will go because they hit closest to home with the player without eliminating the Terran's (id be VERY unplesantly surprised to see the Terrans go)

*Spoilers for campaign if anyone cares*

I don't see how the humans would be involved at all, since they ran and hid at the end of the campaign. The only reason for them to return would be after they come back from Dread Lord space with massively improved technology and a grudge against the Drengin...

Hmm... so I wonder who the 'new' race will be...

Just my little theory.

I'm pretty sure Thalans will stay, since their backstory still needs to be told.

so the expansion pack will be called GalCivIII, right? thats what it sounds like.

as for which two races get wiped out, I guess we could have a poll for it if Stardock hasn't already decided on the two. The expansion pack sounds like alot of fun!

I don't think the Terrans will be killed off because the whole game is about the terran ascendancy and them developing.

So I think maybe the Yor could get killed off and possibly the Iconians

Looks promising. I believe that Blizzard's StarCraft, and to an extent WarCraft III has proven that gamers can easily handle games without a 'happy ending'. In fact, in the Frozen Throne expansion, you're actually striving to see (one of the) bad guys win in the end. I guess it all depends on the wrapping in which the game and story in presented.

I, for one, am curious has the Terran will have evolved in that pocket universe and on Earth. I could imagine them gradually turning darker over time. After all, they 'lost' their homeworld in part due to the incompetence of their allies (their words) and the maniacal Drengin and Dread Lords. So, when they come back, everyone is going to pay.

At least, that just my little fantasy. I think humans could make very good evil guys, after all, a human mind unrestrained by ethics to outsiders can be a fearful weapon. And their loyalty towards one another would create a solid block of an empire.

Oh well, that's the story I often pretend to be playing in the game.

HA! notice the Terrans aren't on the poll! Yay Homo Sapiens!

DEATH TO THE TORIANS!!!!

And the Arceans for that matter. Those two get on my nerves.

I'm betting its between the Altarians, the Torians and the Arceans. All three were defeated by the Drengin/Yor alliance in the campaign. Toria Prime was practically destroyed when it was invaded.

I don't think the Altarians are up for chops just yet. They still have that odd familiarity with the Terrans to be revealed (unless it was revealed in GalCiv I). The Arceans, however, don't seem to be all that 'colourful'. They're an old, neutral empire that's been beaten and they don't strike me as flexible enough to rebuild their empire.

My second guess would be the Korx mainly because their affinity to defection and love for cash seem to get in the way of holding together a serious empire. After all, they'd sell their own mothers for some decent cash.

i say the Terrans should be axed.
those pesky apes have been soiling the galaxy for far too long
(i say this because in a game i'm playing currently, they are my biggest competitors, but i have the virtue of a) owning about 85% of the United Planets seats so voting is just a formality, i have the most advanced anti-missile and anti-beam defenses, and i have the most advanced missile and laser weaponry available, currently researching to finish up the mass driver techs. i have the largest military, by far, but now it is beginning to strain my economy somewhat after years of being a war economy.
but they are plotting. i know it. they are waiting to pass me by in the tech tree.

The Korx are always powerfull in my games. They are cool to play too, dont erase them. In fact, all races can play good in most of my games, except the drath sometimes that really suck.

By the way It would be better to keep all the existing civilization, they are all cool.

I wont buy any Galactic civilization 3 is thoses are removed.

I'm not buying this expansion if the Terrans get eliminated.

Yea right. Pull the other one, thats got bells on.

I want to see the Iconians (good) and Korx (evil) get the chop. They r both useless and I just can not get an affinity for either race. It would keep gameplay balance as well.

Not so bothered if those humans get the chop as well, overrated if u ask me

Come on people, don't say "I won't buy GalCiv 3 when race X is eliminated". It's childish and won't lead to anything.
