My diabolical friend Norm lent me a series of comics called "Rising Stars". It's created by the same guy who made Babylon 5. On the NGs, we always refer to him as JMS. It's a fantastic series of comic books. In a nutshell, what happens is that in a small Illinois town, a flash of light occurs one evening. All the women in that town who were pregnant at the time (around 115) gave birth to children who would have super powers of various kinds. The series goes through their lives as chil...

Saw the first episode of Futurama again today. My wife noticed something very interesting that snuck passed me but given the attention to detail this show has, I wonder what it could mean.. During the show, they do two New Years Eve countdowns (10...9...8...etc.). The first one, taking place in 1999, goes to various parts of the World. They show the Eiffel tower and the people say 9 in French. Similarly, every other part of the world says their number in their native language. However, in...

If you saw The Matrix Reloaded you undoubtedly noticed that the movie had some...issues. Well, the on-line humor site, The Editing Room, has a spoof screen play of the Matrix reloaded.  Read the full thing here . But here are a couple of highlights: INT.  WELL-LIT, NON-NOIR WHITE ROOM KEANU enters a white room, the walls of which are covered in monitors.  A chair spins around to reveal THE EXPLAINER.                         KEANU REEVES             Who are you?         ...

Do you hear that flush? It is the sound of the Sci-Fi channel taking the potential fan base support of Battlestar Galactica and sending it down to the nether regions.  The more I hear about it, the more convinced I am that it is going to suck.  Not suck in a slightly disappointing way but suck in such a massive way that in 10 years we'll look back and put it up there with Star Trek 5 and Battlestar Galactic 1980 as chapters in science fiction that we feel required to forget about. T...

Boy was Matrix Revolutions great! I mean, that scene with Agent Smith as a human making his way to the Zion main frame. It really pulled it together in seeing why he wanted into that mainframe and how it was his ticket out of there. That big battle between Neo and the ghost twins. Now THAT is why he's "The one".  Once you free your mind there's nothing you can't do. Seeing them phasing into other dimensions in their battle was just incredible and I loved the way the world shimmered as Neo ...

http://www.pointlesswasteoftime.com/film/resolutions.html Some interesting alternative endings for The Matrix: Revolutions.   On Bi-polar stuff The trick to dealing with bi-polar, at least mild bi-polar tendencies is for those 3 days of manic behavior where the ideas are flowing: Write them down. Then use the other 20 days of normal level to execute on them.

What do you get when you combine Samurai Jack with Star Wars? The Clone Wars Micro-Series.  These short (very short) episodes run only a few minutes each and are done on the cheap but are incredibly enjoyable. I wish they'd done this between Ep 1 and Ep 2. It's the overall story of the Star Wars universe that excites many fans. And as bad as Ep 1 and Ep 2 were, the problem wasn't so much the story but..ahem..the director.  Ep 1 may not have been the greatest story but you take our ...

There are so many reviews already of Return of the King that I won't waste time going over the basic plot point. The question at the end of the day is "how good is it?"  The answer is - very good.  Now, I have some minor spoilers in here so just skip the rest if you're really paranoid. I'm not giving away anything crucial, just tidbits. On IMDB , I gave Fellowship of the Ring a 10. It's the only movie I've ever given a 10 to.  I gave the Two Towers a 9.  I would...

My wife and I went out to see "Big Fish". Big Fish is a movie in which a son must try to put together the real life story of his father. The dying father spent his life telling his son tall tales of his life. Rather than telling a story as "just the facts", the father flavored his story leaving his adult-aged son bewildered. What is true and what is fantasy? The movie goes through the father's life as he told it. A truly remarkable, even seemingly impossible string of adventures that let th...

Well that sucked. Remaking Battlestar Galactica was always a risky proposition under ideal circumstances. But these circumstances weren't ideal due to a series of seemingly arbitrary changes that eliminated a lot of the good will of the original fans. By arbitrary I mean making Star Buck a girl. Making Boomer a girl. Hey, if you want to have girl power, put in new characters. The biggest arbitrary and I believe ultimately disastrous change was making the Cylons creations of the humans.&nb...

At this point it seems pretty clear that Janet Jackson had every intention of pulling this stunt at the Super Bowl. The question is, what should be done? Based on the reaction there seems to be 3 basic views: Have the FCC impose a huge fine on whoever is responsible including MTV and CBS. Outraged viewers to push pressure on Viacom to punish those responsible. Lighten up, it's a bear breast. Get over it. The first option comes with lots of potential issues with it. First, the FCC...

If The Matrix was a 9 or 10 and Reloaded was maybe a 7. Then Matrix Revolutions is a 3 or 4. Worst movie I've paid to see at a theatre in a long time. But I say that with a big caveat. No set of movies had built up expectations like The Matrix. Movies like "The One" that came out a year or two ago weren't any better than this. But the Matrix, and the story behind it, had been hyped up beyond belief. A lot of the problem appears to me to be one of editing. A few extra scenes, a few scenes...

Some really good fan fiction here. This is a story of Obi-Wan talking about his experiences after sending Anakin to his doom. Post Episode 3 pre-Star Wars.

I really like Stargate: SG1.  I watch it every week.  The characters are good, the stories are good, and despite every planet looking a lot like the forests near Vancouver, the universe they play in is good. I wasn't expecting much of Stargate Atlantis so it came as a pleasant surprise that it was so good.  I mean really good. The jury is out on the characters but the story and backdrop are really outstanding.  The bad guys have to be amongst the scariest bad guys I've ...

Many people have dreamed of writing the great American novel.  Few people actually do it because, well, it’s a ton of work and even harder to get published. These days, you can release your indie book on Amazon but don’t count on selling any copies. The age of publishing isn’t over, not by a long shot.  I’ve talked to many indie authors and I’ve yet to meet one whose book outsold Destiny’s Embers . Not because my book was better but because Random House was my publish...
