I have Office 2007 and kept running into an annoying problem where Excel attachments and Excel files couldn't be opened from Outlook or even Explorer.  I would get the "Windows cannot find" error dialog. Strangely, the solution was this: Open the Excel options, go to the advanced tab, under the general heading uncheck the box that says "Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE).   Hope this helps others that may run into this.

For most people, discussing politics is like discussing football. Sure, it's interesting but it has very little actual affect on their lives at first glance. But in reality, people rarely recognize the unintended consequences of their beliefs. For instance, nearly every conversation with a tax hike supporter inevitably goes something like this: Me : I'm against raising the taxes on anyone, including the top 5%. Tax Supporter : Why? You can afford to pay more in taxes. You'v...

I've seen the argument that we should have the federal government raise taxes back to where they were in the Clinton years.  Such an argument ignores the bigger picture because when the federal government lowered taxes, a lot of states, including Michigan where I live, raised theirs. Let's look at Mr. Rich guy who makes $1M a year (after deductions) and owns a $1M home and lives in Michigan. About $300,000 of his income will go to federal income taxes. Another $40,000 will go...

Great article by Walter E. Williams that helps explain why socialism is a fundamentally evil concept. I'd go even further and say it's also insipid because its supporters actually believe that supporting socialism actually makes them morally superior. Imagine there's an elderly widow down the street from you. She has neither the strength to mow her lawn nor enough money to hire someone to do it. Here's my question to you that I'm almost afraid for the answer: Would you support a go...

Dell has released its Core i7 machines.  The XPS 730X takes isn't just a little bit faster than previous XPS's...it's a LOOOTTT faster. And best of all, Dell has started pre-loaded Vista 64-bit as standard. The XPS 730X comes with Vista 64-bit. Period.  My only complaint is that I can't buy it with 12 gigs pre-installed. 6 gigs is the max they're shipping with right now (4 gigabyte DDR3 RAM is out so it's possible). But my friends, this is the future of comput...

Gas Powered Games is working hard on Beta 2 of Demigod. We don't have a definitive date for it but we're hoping to get it out before Thanksgiving so people can play it over the break (that would be next week). Now, so far beta testers have only played the engine test. That was basically just to see compatibility and performance.  We've taken that data and the GPG team has increased the game's performance dramatically. Beta 2 is where we get into the "meat" of t...

I started back in September on a 7 week diet.  With a beginning weight of 176, my goal was to get down to 165.  This is the first diet I've ever really been on. At first, it went pretty well - a pound a week.  But around week 5, I hit 171 and have not managed to get past that. To lose more weight I have to overcome one primary obstacle: Cold weather.  While I have a treadmill and elliptical at home,  I much prefer to exercise outside. So when the weather starte...

My wife and I got home from a romantic weekend and I discovered to my dismay that I was at 176 pounds. Now, my ideal weight is 165 given my height (5 foot 11) and this was the heaviest I've ever been. Mind you, it's not the health issues or even how I look, it's the clothes. I don't want to have to buy new clothes.  So it's diet time. Let me tell you a few things about dieting that you probably already know: Going from 2 cokes a day to water is not fun. Exchanging ...

As I get ready to simmer down for the evening for a hectic day tomorrow, it appears Obama has it in the bag. They've just called Ohio for Obama which means it's over.  Congratulations to Obama on his historic victory.  It will be interesting to see how things progress from here.

Right now GPG is in the process of implementing generals.  Before I spoil it and tell you how they work it would be cool to hear HOW you guys think they should work? Now, bear in mind, there's balancing and scope involved here. While on paper having assassins play like they do now and have generals play like a Supreme Commander style RTS might sound good, that would be impossible to balance and probably not very fun in practice. So what would you guys like to see? After enough com...

Cisco doesn't support their VPN's on Windows Vista 64. What does this have to do with Galactic Civilizations? A lot actually. I have been working on the GalCiv II v2.0 (tentative release date is November 5) to update the AI and take care of a long list of little pet peeves of when I'm playing. When I do this from home, I need to use the VPN because I use Vista 64-bit. And Cisco's VPN doesn't support 64-bit Vista which makes it tougher to get updates back into the main source tree. ...
